Mordecai has discovered his heritage and must take up the mantle of a lord of the realm, while figuring out what it really means to be a mage of the line of Illeniel.

He is beset on both sides by allies and enemies trying to control or destroy his future. Gods and kings both seek to manipulate him for their own ends, and no matter what he chooses his loved ones will suffer. Will he risk destroying his love with a bond that might be her death, or face the madness that comes to wizards who embrace power without restraint?

Good story, keeps you interested

This story keeps you interested and real life things happen to the character that keep the story interesting.nothing super or superior to other books but a great escape.

Fantastic Character

I am very picky about my fantasy stories. I really want to like the characters which keeps me involved with the story. This author does that very well.

Penelope is such an annoying idiot.

Penelope is such an idiotic, bossy and just all around unlikable character that treats Mort like he's an idiot baby that needs to be told what to do at every turn... it's just annoying to listen to, especially when he just accepts it. If I stop listening to the series, it will be because the audience is clearly supposed to like Penny but I can't stand her. The book would be better if she wasn't written into it.

Amazing!

I liked this narrator way better than the 1st book! I found myself here after going through the Art of the Adept Series. I fell in love w the writing and needed more! Michael Manning nails it! If you love fantasy with realistic human nature this is it! Another writer that made me wonder how I hadnt found him sooner.

Surprisingly depressing but seems like good set up

There is a stark tonal shift from the first one where the plot, in a somewhat contrived manner, drags the main character into 6 hours of reading time into a brooding, depressed, (repetitive) mess. While the vocal performance is amazing and the writing isn’t bad (albeit…repetitive), it’s very unpleasant for a long time. More than necessary in a fantasy book. There are great themes present, however, and it looks like it sets up future installments well.

Worth every minute!

What can I say? The book was wonderful and I finished it all in record time. Although it’s not a very long book, I am a mother of two so I listen throughout the day and whenever I can fit it in and I got this one done and just about one sitting it was very good. The only thing that did kind of irritate me was Penelopes character in the beginning of the book . As a woman, I appreciate the fact that our dear author writes some of his female characters, strong and willful. But, her character was getting out of hand with that a bit and it started to annoy me. However, it was remedied by the end of the book in a way that made the book more interesting and either way it didn’t impact how many stars I gave it, because I would’ve gave it 10 stars if it was possible!!!! Anyway, as I said, the book was wonderful and I’m off to book 3.

Not bad…

It’s not horrible. There is nothing about the book that is entirely original but it is written ok. My biggest issue is with the main character. He demonstrates almost zero common sense and has been consistent the entire series…I typically would expect the protagonist to get wiser but he never seems to learn from his mistakes which is very annoying.

How different!

I love how it’s fantasy but different enough to keep me interested. Feels nice not having a main character constantly being tortured but rather grow.
