Publisher's summary

The exciting first Chronological Man Adventure!

It's 1890 and the citizens of Boston are beginning to go missing in the fog.

The police are confounded. The public is frightened. The city is on the edge of hysteria.

It's up to the mysterious Smith, inventor and adventurer, to figure out what's going on with the help of his assistant, April Malone. They'll have to face off against a secret society, corrupt policemen, and a mad psychologist hell-bent on dissecting Smith, in order to solve the mystery of what's going on and to save the city from an even more sinister threat.

It's the first story of Smith, a hard science fiction time traveler with more than enough quirk to last him several centuries.

Disappointing when compared to this authors previous work

I’m visually impaired, so it’s difficult for me to research whether this book was written before his more popular books, but from the sub end par mechanics: the usage for example he doesn’t use the subjunctive tense when he should, and uses “backwards“ instead of “backward“ I’m assuming either this was an older story that was on publishable, and now that he’s famous he pulled out of mothballs, or because of his celebrity, his editors are not doing their jobs. Don’t get me wrong, the story itself is pretty good, but nothing like the Jessica Blackwood stories or the naturalist. I read the first two books, but the story is not so compelling that I think I will continue the series. Somewhat disappointed

Wish there were a Book 2

An easy read. I always enjoy Andrew Mayne’s books.
The ending was “sort of” a cliff hanger. I want to know more. :-)

Disappointing compared to his other books. Just couldn’t get into the story line and couldn’t finish it.

Superb

Andrew Mayne is a brilliant and entertaining novelist. His abilities to blend science and life with enjoyable fiction are spellbinding. He creates characters that are intriguing: root or boo them. This story is science fiction unlike his other books. I enjoy them all. Highly recommended.

Pleasant Surprise!

Wasn't sure if I would like this book. Took a bit to get into it, but once I did, it turned out to be a very good book.

Dr. Who(ish)

The book started out 75 %fun interesting great characters and then all of a sudden the last 25% of the book just got weird and not enjoyable.

Not up to Mr. Mayne’s usual standard

I have loved every Andrew Mayne book since I read The Naturalist. This book, unfortunately, does not live up to his usual standard. It is kind of science fiction rather than based on real science or “magic” and did not hold my interest. I hope he will return to his science based books.

Excellent

I loved it. I loved the characters and the story. I hope there are more books in the series to listen to. The narration was excellent also.

short but fun

Good early story from Andrew Mayne. I enjoyed it and wonder if he ever wrote more of Smith.
