Publisher's summary

An instant #1 New York Times bestseller!

From beloved powerhouse author Katherine Applegate comes The One and Only Ruby, starring the adorable baby elephant from the Newbery Medal-winning modern classic The One and Only Ivan and its bestselling sequel, The One and Only Bob.

Ruby’s story picks up a few months after the events of The One and Only Bob. Now living in a wildlife sanctuary, Ruby’s caretaker from the elephant orphanage in Africa where she grew up is visiting. Seeing him again brings back a flood of memories both happy and sad of her life before the circus, and she recounts the time she spent in the African savannah to Ivan and Bob.

In the timeless way that only Katherine Applegate could craft, this highly anticipated novel in verse is the perfect mix of heartfelt and humorous, poignant and sweet. Artist Patricia Castelao returns to the world of Ivan and his friends with gorgeous black-and-white interior illustrations to complete the story.

The One and Only Ruby features first-person narrative; author's use of literary devices (personification, imagery); and story elements (plot, character development, perspective).

This middle grade novel is an excellent choice for tweens in grades 5 to 8, for independent book time, homeschooling, and sharing in the classroom.

Don’t miss the film adaptation of The One and Only Ivan, now streaming on Disney+!

narrator is definitely a child

the narrator isnt a baby like ruby the elephant was when she was telling all her past stories. we arent sure how old ruby is supposed to be, but however old she is its when elephants get their tusks and it means they are growing up. the narator sounds as though she is 12 or 13 and thats perfect for a kids book. a lot of books ive read are childrens books and yet the marrator sounds like they are an 18 year old trying to pass as the sound of a 14 year old or even a 12 year old. in my opinion their is a huge difference between 12 and 14 and im not talking just the 2 years difference. 18 is an adult, 14 theyve gone through puberty beginings and so their voice no longer sounds the childish coice of a 12 year old. when narrating a book the authors in charge should learn to pick a voice closer to the age of the characters they are reading for. its kind of been driving me crazy for a couple of years since ive been using audible. but seriously though about the book it was slow and a little boring as i predicted because ive read the other one and only books. but this story was just not really all that great. i dont know if its because its new and so i just couldnt love it or what. but i kept longing to just switch over to the one and only bob or even the one and only ivan. ive read bob two or more times and ovasn only once and maybe its just me but i always love the original or first of anything regarding books and movies. other than though of course you have to still show some love for the book because it had ivan and bob in it like the other 2 books. it even mentioned dead stells because they kind of had to. i mean stella was an elephant from the other 2 books and ruby is an elephant so they had to put her in their to stick with the book being an elephant book. the riddles or jkes are lame, but i did still kind of laugh. nice attempt i would say to hatherine applegate. oh and ive pretty much read all of your boks by the way. so yes im a fan. i wouldnt have read the book if i wasnt a fan of you katherine applegate. are all the one and only books this short though. maybe thats why i didnt like it as much. i dont know. i was glad it was short since i wasnt enjoying it as much. but even from the begining i was like why is this only less than 4 hours when its a brand new book. i think you should have added more. i know that makes the actual book look bigger and that throws kids off from wanting to read the physical book in hand. but i just think maybe there needed to be a bit more. actually i think it was a good job. maybe not a very good job, but i would read it again if i ever got bored. kind of proud to have it in my library and am planning to get the physical book for my nephew when he graduates from elementary school soon. he promised he would want it. but i dont believe him. so if he doesnt want it im keeping it for me. ha ha!

I love this book

This book and series is amazing, I highly recommend reading or listening to it. Other works by the author are good as well, but this series is especially interesting to me. I love following the adventures of Ivan, Bob, Ruby, and of course Stella.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really nice book!

This book is very sweet and enjoyable for kids and adults. I like how it describes Ruby's past, and I think the narrator does a good job.
