About this listen

Widowed Julia, Lady Winterset, has inherited a book - a very shocking book - that every gentleman in London seems to want. For a charismatic businessman, it’s a chance to build an empire. For a dashing novelist, it could guarantee fame. But to a proud, domineering earl, it means everything....

Harrison Landingham, Earl of Mountdale, can’t let the obstinate Julia release the shameless memoir that could ruin his family’s name. But the only way to stop her may be equally sordid - if far more pleasurable. For his rivals are intent on seducing the captivating woman to acquire the book. And Harrison isn’t the sort to back away from a competition with the stakes this high. Now the winner will claim both the scandalous memoirs and the heart of their lovely owner....

Good book, bad narrator

OMG!!!! This books was good, really nice! The narrator however was horrible, I absolutely hated her voice! If it was a different narrator, I would have given this book five stars.

Loved the story

Enjoyed the story and the writing. Pretty good dialogue and characters. The narrator was not so good - I don't need full dramatization, but a little more distinction between voices, particularly in the midst of a conversation without 'he said' and 'she said' would have helped. Sometimes I lost track of who said what.

This was my second Victoria Alexander book and I will look for more.

Disappointed

The narrator is not good. I almost stopped listening half way through but I enjoy Victoria Alexander books so I pressed on.

Tedious experience

Where does The Perfect Mistress rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was not the worst but I found it a struggle to get through

What was most disappointing about Victoria Alexander’s story?

The dialogue was so difficult to listen to. But, I realized as I listened to the second in the series that it was the narrator who made it so tedious.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jennifer Dixon’s performances?

No, if I can avoid this narrator I will.

Really Enjoyed!! 💜

A lot of reviews complained about the narrator, but I liked her. I thought it was more 'realistic' a reading than all the voice changes others do. When reading a book in my head, I do not have voice changes, per sey, but read in one voice, and just know that it's a change. Hard to explain. lol. However, there were some times, that it took a second or two to realized that the character had changed, but being an audio book, I don't think that is out of the normal.

Also, really enjoyed the story. I think it's a great option!

Good story...narration so/so.

I enjoyed the story very much...I do not usually like books with a paranormal theme, but this one had charm. The narrator was very good with the voices for elderly women, but I had a hard time differentiating some of her other voices. She did improve towards the end, however (or I got used to her).

Documentary, not romance

Feels like a documentary about someone you don't know or care about, narrated by an elderly person. Passionless and goes on forever. Did not finish. Couldn't.

Like a computerized audio

This is my first review after purchasing hundreds of audios. No voice differences between characters. It is like listening to a computer. Not up to the usual quality of the publisher. I don't know if I have ordered a book with this narrator before but this one is terrible. The book has a little lower price but I'd rather pay a little more to enjoy the listening experince.

Will never listen to this narrator again!

The story line was great but the charaters voices were such a mismatch to the story! It ruined the whole thing. The females voices were hard to distinguish from the males and although the female characters were clearly in their 20s, the females sounded like they were in there sixties. They sounded silly not witty or charming. I buy and listen to hundreds of Audiobooks and can't beleive that this performance passed the critera for release. I'm not particulary picky and usually I can get used to less than perfect narration but couldn't do that with this one.
