Good story, really sore narration

I liked this story, but had to listen to it on 1.25 bc the narration was really, really slow to the point of being distracting

A fun ride

Drew Magary is one of my favorite authors and this one definitely doesn't disappoint. It's a strange and short ride but worth the experience.

Fun payoff

You had to know the end was going to be great with the boring dullness of the character. It was delivered perfectly by Mr. Fouhey.

A compelling human story about charming grumpiness

Drew Magary is excellent at capturing the complexity of age and grumpiness. This is a charming and well-paced story, and I was left wishing it continued into a full length novel.

Narration ruins it—read instead

The narration is so stale that I almost gave up, but a skim through the reviews kept me going. In the end it was…fine. Had I read this instead listening the story may have hit different. However the bland delivery left me feeling just as “meh” by story as I was by the narration.

Not for me

I grabbed The Rover because it is in the Audible Plus catalogue and I really liked Magary's The Hike. I don't have much to say that's positive about it. The innovative storytelling I enjoyed in The Hike is not present. This story doesn't do anything unique.

I had a hard time identifying with the main character, even though he and I have a few shared personality traits and life events. I didn't enjoy James Fouhey's reading of this one, but I do feel his voice fit the material perfectly.

This is a pretty short listen, but I can't say the story told is worth that time. There isn't really much of a social commentary being conveyed and the story feels like a first draft.

I'll rate this one as, "I don't think I'm the intended audience".
