Publisher's summary

Snow, secrets, an icy lady of the manor, a vile villain, open fires, and hidden love.

A frosty December, Bethan Griffiths has returned home for Christmas to unwrap secrets. It's the 1970s and she is back in the village of Foel in the Welsh hills to raise her daughter. They arrive to the open arms of her family and the community, but not all is what it seems, and Beth isn't home for the reason she pretends, either.

Vicious notes start appearing that reveal harsh truths about the village inhabitants, stirring up ancient pasts, old loves, and the dead. Not even local dignitary, the elegant and aloof Lady Melling who hides in her manor house, is safe from the accusations.

But when Beth receives her notes, they aren't what she expected. Is she being toyed with like the other villagers, or is she being guided to a long-sought truth?

The Tell Tale has been watching and waiting, because there's something queer about the village of Foel.

The Tell Tale was just that …

The Tell Tale was just that! A tale told wonderfully and a wonder-filled tale it is … just the right amount of mystery and drama. The suspense was perfectly timed. Throw in some romance and friendship through the years. I enjoyed this listen so much and I hope others will too.

Slow burn mystery

A tale of intrigue and mystery, wrapped up in the beauty of love and friendship, and the disdain of patriarchal privilege.

Wonderful story!

The characters were amazing and the writing was fabulous. The performance by the narrator was also very good. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a little bit of mystery and a little bit of romance.

Excellent

Excellent story telling and suspense. So, so good! Clare Ashton is a phenomenal writer. I was completely absorbed and the narrator pulled me in further. It was as though I was watching rather than listening. Highly recommended!!!

Realistic Fiction??

This definitely feels like a retelling of story plucked out of history that could honestly still take place today in many towns/villages all over the globe. It can be a hard listen at times where not enough people OVERTLY stand up to the patriarchal privilege, bigotry, homophobia, and sexism for the characters that represent myself. However, it was absolutely worth the listen when I was in the mind-frame to do so. Paying attention to the small details that helped change the course of the story really helped me to justify the listen. It is still a reality we live in, not that I didn’t think about taking the majority of the men to humiliate them in the middle of town, but not realistic. To the reviews that helped me pick the correct time to listen, thank you! I wouldn’t have made it very far through this listen if I wasn’t in the mindset to do so. - “The ending wasn't satisfying enough to justify listening to all the bigotry, homophobia, and sexism.” “A tale of intrigue and mystery, wrapped up in the beauty of love and friendship, and the disdain of patriarchal privilege.” “The suspense was perfectly timed.”

toxic

This book was truly a rough listen. There was so much toxicity, granted I understand that was the purpose of story. The ending wasn't satisfying enough to justify listening to all the bigotry, homophobia, and sexism.
