About this listen

1954: The Winter Soldier is the Soviet Union's greatest weapon. Assigned the most dangerous covert missions from the USSR's secret military branch, and guided by a handler who knows him better than he knows himself, he has only one purpose: to obey orders. But he wasn't always the Winter Soldier . . .

1941: As World War II begins, sixteen-year-old Bucky Barnes is determined to enlist in the US army—if only the local commander will stop getting in his way. When Bucky is offered enrollment in a training program with the British Special Operations Executive—the UK's secret service—he leaps at the chance to become a hero. But Bucky has hardly touched down in London when he finds himself running from a mysterious assassin and accompanied by an English chess champion fond of red lipstick and double crosses. She's in possession of a secret every side is desperate to get their hands on. If only they knew what it was . . .

Decades later, the Winter Soldier struggles to solve the same mystery Bucky is just beginning to uncover. As their missions intersect across time, their lives collide too—in a way that neither of them would have expected, and that will change the course of their respective wars.

In The Winter Soldier: Cold Front, on-sale on February 7, 2023, New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee explores the youth of one of Marvel's most compelling characters, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes—and the enemy soldier he is forced to become.

Speechless

This was so well written and well told. The ending ripped my heart out and chopped it up into a billion pieces, lit those on fire and then shoved them back into my chest. But extremely well written story.

Awesome

The narrator sounds just like the actor who plays Bucky Barnes. Amusing, fun, believable. One of the best narrators I’ve heard for sure and great story.

A glimpse into what shaped his pain

I'd have to say this is one of the best books I've listened to in a long time. A jumble of memories of the go lucky Bucky and his innate sense of humor to such painful listless agony of not knowing, never remembering...all spiked with a heart splitting dose of loneliness, loss, but above all...the will to survive and the hope to thrive.

Saddest book I have read.

I loved this book, It was Amazing! But it is also super sad. I love marvel (and Dc) and have Watched and Read most of the movies and comics, But this book stood out. My friend who likes the winter soldier recommended it to me, and of course I started to read it, It was Good at the start sometimes I could easily get into, But when you continue to read it you See the connections, and that just Ripped me apart in tears, Especially the Ginny part, And it hurts to know she killed herself And I wished she kissed him before killing herself… Also the part with the Mask was Heartbreaking, They way he talks about it like it is a muzzle, but how he keeps coming back to say it’s so helpful. And the Part with his handler was Death! And the way she killed herself was Enough to make me stop reading just to cry. Overall great good definitely recommend, But you will cry.

Awesome Winter Soldier story

I really enjoyed this. I’m a diehard WS fan and I loved the Easter eggs scattered throughout the story. The narration was good, and a lot of accents for different characters to cover. Definitely wanted more of this story and didn’t want it to end.

Nice look into Bucky’s journey

Narration was perfect!!!

I did get a little mixed up on the back and forth but the accents helped me get back on track. The ending was super sad.

back and forth

it was good, just all over the place. 1941 to 1955 it wasn't hard to keep up, i just figured it would meet in the middle at some point and explain what happened.

Terrible

I’m the complete opposite of these other reviews. There was no apparent story to follow. After listening I can’t even say what it was about. Waste of my time
