About this listen

ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Red has tried to keep his nose clean but the sins of his past still haunt him. They’ve forced him back into the darkness—toward a life he’d hoped to leave behind. Now he has just four days to make things right.

The scam seemed safe enough at first, but now Red is six figures in debt, and there's more than just money at stake. There's making things right with the daughter he turned his back on. There's greasing the palms of the disturbed criminals holding his geriatric mother as collateral. There's being able to face himself in the mirror.

Everyone in the city's underbelly knows there’s only one way to obtain such a large sum on short notice...

Shadows is an underground casino where nightmares are born and dreams go to die. Where humiliation, drugs, and violence are as much a part of the games as cards and dice. When Red enters a world where money isn’t the most coveted prize, will he earn enough to solve his problems, or suffer the ultimate loss?

This was a fascinating concept. I've never enjoyed gambling, so I definitely can't imagine being so desperate as to be willing to gamble with my own flesh. The descriptions in this book are so well done that I felt certain I could even smell some of them. Only recommended for those with a strong stomach.

Great concept

Loved the coin flip for the ending. Always a great story that keeps you interested.

One of Aron's beat works. Really wish we had closure on Red's "daughter" though.

Had me hooked beginning to end.

Another disgusting book by Aron Beauregard with colorful metaphors. A plot similar to The Squid Game or Saw. The alternate endings were a nice touch. I liked it, but the pace was a little slower in some spots than most of AB’s books. I listened to this on Audible, and John Wayne Comunale gave a great performance.

Classic Beauregard work with gut wrenching gore that keeps you guessing. Would’ve like to have see a little more refinement rather than simple shocking scenes for simple shock sake. Otherwise a good splatterpunk addition.

Gruesome Fun

If you’ve not read any Aron Beauregard books, then don’t start with this one! But if you have read his work, I’m confident you’ll enjoy it.

Enjoyed this!

Getting past the vile, gross, thriller this is, the house always wins. That out of the way, it's time to talk about this book.

There's two different endings and the "The End" depends on what the reader chooses. As instructed, I flipped and made my choice then I listened to the other. Regardless the outcome, metaphorically it is the same for the main character. He goes through it. You will too. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I dry-heaved thanks to this book. At work. I listened at work and my office mate brought me water and crackers. And a small box. I felt gross.

I will say this does suck you in and the pacing is good. Sometimes you "sit at the end of your seat" waiting and other times....you dry heave. In your breakfast. Ugh. I needed Tums that time. (Back in track lol) The characters are good. Very compelling. The main characters are decently developed and I found myself invested on characters I knew wouldn't survive. This can also be said for the Black version of this story which is a "buddy book" written by Daniel J Volpe. (shameless plug: Go read that to get the "other side of the chip").

The endings were satisfying. One more than the other IMO. Also I didn't feel they were rushed. Eh. Well one could have been a little more developed, but I won't take points off.

Overall, this is a solid splatter punk story. It's extreme. body and situational horror. Lots of shock and depravity.

Amazing story. was hooked right from the beginning. Loved the idea if multiple ensigns.
Will get the Black version next.

Great story

This book was definitely a book. there were pages and words, and someone decided to read those words out loud.

All kidding aside, I did enjoy this book. it was captivating and intriguing and held my attention the entire time. There were definitely some scenes in this book that made me feel sick, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

This was probably my first full blown extreme horror novel and I was hesitant when I started, but I was pleasantly (or not so pleasanlty) surprised that it wasn't that bad.
I give it 🤢🤢🤢🤢

I have read/ listened to many of Aron's books, huge fan, but this is the first one I had to pause and take a break on cause it was too much at once, haha. I really enjoyed the story line and the details were perfect.
Choosing my own ending was pretty cool too, I haven't seen that done in awhile!

So gross but I loved every second of it
