About this listen
The very last thing U.S. Marshal Eoghan Sapphire wants is a new partnership. Worse yet, the transfer from Lexington, Kentucky is a civilian. That means it’ll be Eoghan’s responsibility to break him into the I.S.R. and the unique way their particular U.S. Marshals Service unit operates. He decides being a jerk to him and keeping him at arm’s length just might be the way to handle things…until he meets him.
Aristotle Brown isn’t like anyone Eoghan’s ever known before. He’s polite, willing to learn, and most of all, devastatingly handsome. Eoghan’s actually happy they’re thrown into a dangerous situation with a WITSEC protectee the first day his brand-new partner is on the job. Dealing with this particular man will let Eoghan know what Ari Brown’s made of. Will he break under pressure?
Dealing with humans is standard everyday stuff in the U.S. Marshals Service but other non-human species like shifters, other paranormals, and aliens from distant star systems…well, that’s where things promise to get downright interesting. Their second day on the job is no different. And he’s not prepared for Ari’s cool-headed composure when he comes face to face with an example of everything the I.S.R. deals with every day.
To top it all off, the marshal sent to back the two men up when things get dicey in Griffith Park isn’t as reliable as Eoghan had hoped. The impulses of the guy nearly get them all killed but fortunately, Ari performs like a dream, helping extract everyone when things go from bad to worse. Eoghan is sure of a couple of things…acting as this man’s training officer isn’t going to be such a struggle after all, and keeping his hands off him is going to be the hardest part about this assignment.

I’ve always been a sucker for a guy with muscles and a handsome face. If that makes me sound shallow, maybe I am. I’ve never had a real relationship, unless you consider the guys in my Marine Corps Recon unit. I had a great relationship with those guys. Yeah, yeah, I know we’re splitting hairs. These days, long after my retirement from active duty, the only kind of relationships I really do now are with fictional characters.

When ghostwriter Maz Amani inherits a house from an uncle he’s never heard of, he offers heartfelt thanks to the universe, packs up his car, his cat, and his skepticism about mysterious uncles leaving all their worldly goods to unknown nephews, and high-tails it to a small town halfway to the Oregon coast. Anything would be better than week after week of couch surfing his way around Portland. Even if the alleged house is a rundown shack ridden with termites, spiders, and—shudder—rats, he’ll deal. Weirdly, people don’t react overly well when you’re caught standing over the dead body of a murderer who’d walked free. It’s not that I thought my fellow homicide detective would rejoice when he saw what I’d done, but is a pat on the back too much to ask for? Maybe a gold star at the very least? The problem is that the person who caught me is Gabriel, the only person I care for and adore… and he’s prepared to look the other way if I leave homicide and promise to never kill again.

Something is very wrong with the Fitzwilliam estate. It was supposed to be a regular seance job. But from the minute I met an angry ghost in the hall, I knew there wasn't going to be anything ordinary about this house or its dead residents. First of all, there were way too many of them. Second, some of them had been helped along from living to dead. Third, my attempt to figure out what was going on got a bit sidetracked when I met the gardener. He was tall, dark green, and handsome. And really, really smart. So I hired him to help me figure out what was going on.

Ash is technically a fire mage, but he can't do much. Turning his bedroom lights on and off without having to get out of bed isn't exactly awe inspiring, not when anyone with the right gadget could clap and do the same thing. Worse, sometimes he senses something bigger and brighter lurking under his skin, and it feels so familiar he knows it has to be his magic, but then he burps or sneezes, and the feeling passes. So it's probably just allergies . . . or gas. Yeah . . . Not exactly brimming with magical oomph. Not anymore. It sucks.

Extracted from the Authors Note on the Audio Version
... While deciding on how I wanted U.S. Marshals I.S.R. (Interspecies Response) narrated, I was listening to a few dual narrations and liked the concept which I hadn't done in any past books. The problem was the way the two characters traded off, chapter by chapter. I know a lot of listeners love it but to me, that felt choppy. But, when I met Kevin Earlywine and Declan Winters at GRL last year, I suddenly knew what I wanted to do.
In this series, one narrator will voice a character throughout the whole book in his point of view until the end when the other character and narrator will jump in. The next book will alternate, narrated in the other character's point of view until the end and so on. I thought it might be different and fun for my readers.
I'd now like to introduce you to my narrator partners in this endeavour. Kevin Earlywine will be telling Tooth and Nail as Eoghan Sapphire, and Declan Winters will be joining him in Chapter Twenty-One as Aristotle Brown. ...
----------------------------------------
📖 Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, interesting and entertaining story.
I was delightfully entertained with this new spin on a U.S. Marshals team investigating all things alien. There's a lot going on, so the pace is good, and there are some rather amusing scenes reminiscent of the "Men in Black" type of humor.
🎧 Narrator comment: Despite Kevin Earlywine's significant audio catalog, he's a "new to me" narrator and I enjoyed his performance of Tooth and Nail, he has good cadence, inflections and intonations, a good variety of character voices, and his performance bought the characters to life. I did nudge the speed up to 1.1x (which I hate doing) as I found the 1.0 speed just a little slow for the constant action and "on the go" feel of the story.
Overall an entertaining story and a good performance - I look forward to the rest of the series!

My minor quibble is that Ari was dumped into the deep end of the ocean into his first day on the job with no training or knowledge of the paranormal and expected to have no reactions or questions, simply do as he was told. That felt unrealistic and unfair to him.
The audio was primarily performed by Kevin Earlywine, with chapters near the end by Declan Rhodes. Both did a great job with the story.

The world-building was generally interesting, though there was a little bit of info-dumping at times from one of the MCs—but given the plot and the way the other MC is thrust into the world of the ISR, it’s logical for it to happen as such. The background we’re given as to some political happenings gave me a tiny bit of pause, as someone who has family currently living on a reservation in the US, but the supernatural is integrated into the “real world” happenings in a way that doesn’t seem totally out of place. All in all, this book seems to set up the series pretty solidly. And it made me miss living near Los Angeles a bit (but not the traffic) 😆
As a note to the narration, the second narrator’s voice doesn’t come in till the last chapter, but the reason is given in the author’s note, before the story begins. The main narrator has a very distinct (to me) cadence to his speech which was just the tiniest bit distracting at first, but I adjusted to it just fine as the story went on.
Interesting start to a series

These are just some of the crazy paranormal and sci-fi characters who feature in this new series of Patricia Logan. As usual, and what I enjoy with Logan’s books is a series that revolves around the same couple so we get to see them deepen their connection as they continue to kick bad guy butt out in the field! Aristotle (Ari) Brown is a familiar face - we were introduced to him in the FBI Files series - and he has transferred from Kentucky to LA and been introduced to a world he had no idea existed before his first day with the ISR.
There is a LOT going on in this book as Logan sets the stage which left me a little whiplashed at times. I feel the book could have done with less or been longer so I had more time to get acquainted with this world. It definitely interested me however and I will be jumping into the next one to enjoy the journey Logan is going to take us on. I love how this carefully concealed paranormal world is set alongside Logan’s other series. I would freak out so badly if Jarrett and Thayne were introduced to the knowledge of all the craziness happening around them they have absolutely zero idea about. I can only imagine what new wild things Jarrett would get himself into.

a fun and crazy ride!

the narrator is stiff in his performance. he has no trouble differentiating character voices, but there is a baseline monotony to everything. like there is some emotion and affect, but it’s very constrained. the reading pace is slow as well. similar to another reviewer, I found 1.1x to be the right speed
while on the whole the writing is ok, the whole “follow orders or else” bit in the middle seemed really shallow and contrived. while ari had the right reaction to the orders, it made no sense why eoghan would be so lackadaisical in his response from his boss to basically give the good guy directly back to the bad guy without a second thought. and then having to sell the boss on doing the right thing. it shouldn’t have needed to be a sell.
it’s possible the narrator’s performance of eoghan’s lines during that part may have diminished the intended effect. I could see doing the lines with a cynical and irritated tone being more believable from eoghan.
anyways give the book a read. it’s good enough and just know to ignore some of the annoying parts to get to the rest
interesting story, stiff narration
