About this listen

The new novel in the hit New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council - and there's only one, final punishment for that crime. He's on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden....

Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head - someone like Harry

Critic reviews

“Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.” (Midwest Book Review)

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

The reason to get audio books

I've been a Jim Butcher fan for a long time, and have read the previous Harry Dresden books at least twice each. Listening to James Marster put his immersive spin on these familiar characters adds a completely new and compelling aspect to these books and for me the reason to get these on audio. If Audible can get all the previous Dresden books read by Marster, I would buy them all, and see it as another yet new opportunity to get into the Dresden stories.

Holy Cow! He's done it again!

Excellent listen! James Marsters once again nails Harry's personality dead on. The whodunit is ... wonderful. Jim Butcher delivers with this one! I highly recommend beginning at the beginning, reading or listening to the series in order, however this one could stand alone. Get snax and a beverage of choice, kick your feet up, and delve head-first into this one!

Not his Best, still Good and Necessary

to move to overarching storyline and mystery, this book does more than most. and, maybe, that's where it falls short.
Butcher tells great stories and it's amazing how consistently he can put out these great Dresden titles, but sometimes to add cohesion, a title has to fall short.
I still recommend it to any fans of the series, especially, if like me, you read all of them.

James Marsters is Awesome!!

I really enjoyed this book, it was one of the better ones in the series. I will miss Morgan as an antagonist. I can't say enough great things about James Marsters!

Best one so far!

I simply could not stop listening to this one. You have to listen to all of them so all the pieces of the puzzle come together but it is so worth it.

Excellent!

Another outstanding addition to the fantastic Dresden series. These books really capture and hold my attention. Long commutes just fly by. I hope Butcher never stops writing them.

One of the best Dresden Files stories

This one is emotional, with multiple good guys dying while doing the right thing. Several huge things in the series get setup in this book and the silent fight against the Black Council finally confess to the fore, if ever so briefly. Marsden is Dresden, as always, and every other character is distinct as well. I've read all the books and now I'm listening to them. This one ranks with Dead Best and Changes as one of my favorites in my favorite series

Very enjoyable book and a very enjoyable series

The only thing that was frustrating was trying to get the broken Audible Software to allow me to review this book. The writer the story and the Narrator are all elite. The Audible software to write this review is filled with many software bugs, and would get zero stars from me. At least the most import thing is I can listen to the audiobooks. But I suspect many users have to jump through hoops just to get the audible software to recognize when a user has finished a book, that the software is able to mark the book as finished so a listener is able to write a review. I would present this concern to their support box, but that too is broken right now, and is malfunctioning.

Brilliant

Each sequel is better, more complex, more entertaining than the last. I hope he starts to write again!
