Ok, but not the best

I found myself really annoyed by the heroine until the very end which makes it hard to enjoy the book. I also didn’t care for the circumstances around their first time together which felt a lot like he was taking advantage of her.. which made me hate him through half the book too. I love Mary’s book and have read many of them.. but so far this was my least favorite.

Okay Story

I usually love this author but it was hard to follow this story as the character Moira was quite frustrating. I wish they would have came to certain details earlier in the story.

Horrible heroine

I can’t remember ever disliking a female lead character, as much as Moira. She was just difficult for no reason. I wish her character development happened midway through the story, rather than at the very end.

Moira is extremely irrational and Kenneth only appeased

Any one as irrational as Moira who purposely & stupidly walked home in a snow storm while graciously invited by her host to stay in a comfortable warm mansion. To spite the gracious host, she had to become the damsel distress without the warm clothes and needing to be rescued by her host as well as her childhood infatuation who actually cared about her. Moira would surely have frozen to death without her future husband, Kenneth. Moira is completely ungrateful and doesn’t mention her disregard for herself and the one who had to rescue her. To keep warm, Kenneth ensured the body heat of their bodies and subjugating both to conjugal relations which Moira enjoyed. With this encounter, Moira completely becomes even more hateful, lying, despicable, ugly, shameful, and the worst kind of person towards Kenneth, while he only wants to marry her and comfort Moira. After 3 months of her belligerent treatment towards Kenneth, Moira tells him she is with child. Kenneth being the proper gentlemen immediately forces Moira to marry him while she is still hateful to him. The problem with this scenario is that realistically historically and currently there are no persons that could withstand the irrationality of a person who is so hateful, contemptuous, deceitful, ugly, and cold could any person want to marry him or her!

Should have taken heed

Would you try another book from Mary Balogh and/or Rosalyn Landor?

yes

What was most disappointing about Mary Balogh’s story?

Heroine...she was so annoying... she have to defy the hero at every turn...every turn...take it down a notch.

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

Rosalyn was great per usual.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

More of a prelude to the 3rd book...

Any additional comments?

Since i like to complete series i am glad i listen to this but it is the weakest book in the trilogy.

You have to love Mary Balogh…

…to continue reading this book in the series, the MC, Moira is dreadful and the other MC, Ken is cold and unforgiving.
And unfortunately, it takes about 95% of the book for them to understand what they have been doing to sabotage their relationship. Some folks really enjoy books with lots of angst. I gave this four stars since Mary Balogh is such a good writer.

Not a simple love story...

Mary Balogh creates an emotionally complex story that feels almost like 3 books in one. She does not take the easy way from start to finish in this tale of struggling love.
And Rosalyn Landor does a fantastic job once again with her range of characterization, bringing to life each individual in this book.

Will they ever just say what they think?

Don’t read this before the first volume of the series. Great to see recurring characters as part of the plot development. Plot however is on off on off in a frustrating series of nobody saying what’s really on their mind. Hoping for better in volume three…

Well, I liked it!

In reviewing the comments, a good bit of people who have listened to this book did not like it and at first those negative comments almost made me not want to continue listening to this book. I kept waiting on the book to get boring or tedious and it never did. I'm glad I kept listening. I liked the book. Moira, the leading lady, is bitter but she is also afraid. She is afraid to show her feelings and hides behind an angry facade. She is hurt when overhearing Kenneth's mother and sister talk about her. The mother and sister were very rude to Moira to her face and behind her back. What a difficult situation that would be and would really put a strain on a couples relationship.

Anyway - I liked this book. I thought it was well written, like all of Mary Balogh's books.

Not my favorite in series but…

Consistent in character development. Far fetched scenario in surviving the winter storm brings to mind a rebuttal spoken repeatedly in the series, try not to be ridiculous. And yet it is, but how else are you going to push the plot. Chug through this one, the next is so much better. Irresistible is my favorite. Carry on…
