About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger comes the haunting short story of how one woman’s heroic vocation hides the secret guilt she’s tried to bury.

Charlie Kroft’s job at the crisis center means she’s often seen as a hero: she’s helped countless people climb out of the deepest pits of personal despair. But when one phone call thrusts Charlie into the spotlight, she must contend with the hidden pain that drives her…and with the mysterious stranger who knows the truth.

Lisa Unger’s Unknown Caller is part of We Could Be Heroes, a darkly inquisitive collection of short stories that examines heroic intentions versus their real-life consequences. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.

Heartbreaking but good

This story brought up a lot of memories and understanding of what this young woman was talking about. She experienced something and made a choice
that she regretted for the rest of her life. I made a choice years ago that others would say resulted in someone’s death. I received a phone call to pick a friend up who was drunk & out of sorts. She was was out of town when she called. I was in bed sleeping and I had taken my nighttime medication when the phone call came in. She asked me if I would go pick her up. I told her no I was tired of trying to clean up her mess that I was already sleeping and with having taken my medication I was afraid to drive to pick her up. The next morning I found out she had thrown her self in front of a car in the highway. With no identification, but a very unique leather coat identify her. So this short story kicked up some a lot for me emotionally. Very well done and performed.

Really good!!!

The narrator was outstanding. She had a well written story to narrate. Lisa auger wrote an outstanding story. I highly recommend. The beginning and the end we're tied in a neat little bow. Great for someone who has an hour to spare.

Good short story

Good story, but a bit preachy and somewhat predictable. Good narration. Nothing more to add…

211

This was a brutal story. Ugh, how I despise mean girls and high school drama. Dial 211 for a full range of non-emergency social, health and government services in your community.

Interesting short story

Another quick novella length story that is part of the "We are Heroes" anthology.

This book has us follow the female MC who is a volunteer at a suicide prevention hotline. We start in the "present" and little by little we are given snippets of the "past" and the events that led the MC to the field that she is in today.

In the meantime, something is going on in the "present" as she begins to get strange calls to the hotline and it becomes apparent that someone knows about her past.

Sound interesting? It was.

Excellent insight into mental health problems

This short story does wonders in highlighting mental health problems and the feelings of anguish and hurt you go through when you feel your life is not worth living. Definitely relatable on many levels
