About this listen

THE TIKTOK SENSATION FROM THE UK HAS COME TO NORTH AMERICA!

“Magical, murderous, romantic romp through a fantasy world as colorful as it is captivating.” Thea Guanzon, New York Times bestselling author of THE HURRICANE WARS

A mind-blowing murder mystery on a ship full of magical passengers. If Agatha Christie wrote fantasy, this would be it!

For a thousand years, Concordia has maintained peace between its provinces. To mark this incredible feat, the emperor’s ship embarks upon a twelve-day voyage to the sacred Goddess’s Mountain. Aboard are the twelve heirs of the provinces of Concordia, each graced with a unique and secret magical ability known as a Blessing.

All except one: Ganymedes Piscero—class clown, slacker and all-around disappointment.

When a beloved heir is murdered, everyone is a suspect. Stuck at sea and surrounded by powerful people and without a Blessing to protect him, Ganymedes’s odds of survival are slim.

But as the bodies pile higher, Ganymedes must become the hero he was not born to be. Can he unmask the killer and their secret Blessing before this bloody crusade reaches the shores of Concordia?

Or will the empire as he knows it fall?

Amazing

My friend recommended this book and I won’t lie I was a little wary because I’m not usually one for mysteries but WOW I was enrapt the entire time this was so good. Every time I thought I had it figured out I was thrown for another twist yet none of them seemed completely out of left field. This is a stunning work of art with so much great representation that I just couldn’t put it down. Whatever Frances White writes next I’m reading no questions asked!!

Witty & empathetic fantasy murder mystery

As a huge fan of books like both Gideon the Ninth and Murder on the Orient Express, this book was a fantastic fit for my tastes. It is also very inclusive and full of positive messages, including self-acceptance, equality, learning to value diversity, and the power of chosen family.

The book reminded me most strongly of Gideon the Ninth, but with a central character who is more tender-hearted and conflicted internally.

The characters, world-building, and magic system are all really nicely done. I personally like epic fantasy so would have liked more details, but a lot of people don't like extra details and the plot was tightly edited and not at all lacking for sure.

I hope there will be a sequel because it would be nice to see how things evolve with the changes being made and the societal shifts that were already underway accelerating.

A very well-done and welcome entry into modern fantasy whodunnits! loved it

Twists and turns and I didn’t see that coming

Absolutely not what I expected. Part mystery, part self discovery; alternate funny and heartbreaking. I don’t think I’ve read anything quite like this before. So many twists and unexpected revelations, some I guessed correctly; others I got completely wrong. I will be thinking about this for a while yet.

Fantastic Voyage

Frances White has created the most intriguing, multi-layered fantasy mystery I've ever encountered. Nathan Foad is brilliant in his narration. An absolute blast, highly recommend!

Breath of fresh air!

What an amazing book. I wanted to write a review from the first chapter. Witty dialogue, sea cruise murder mystery that keeps you guessing, LGBTQA+ representation, fully realized characters and a fast paced plot. I am looking forward to more from the author.

An unusual murder mystery

Really enjoyed this one. A likable rogue all the characters hate has to find out who’s killing the passengers. My only minor criticism is that I wish the epilogue was longer. Otherwise a perfect book imo.

Enchanting Story (with Murder)

I loved this entire story! The twists were surprising and satisfying, the main character’s personal journey was endearing, and the representation was so, so lovely. In top of all that, the narration was PERFECTION! This one is well worth the time investment, and I will be returning to this book again and again.

What a fun ride!

I waited 8 long months for this book to be available where I am, and it did not disappoint! And, honestly, I think I understand the 'healing my inner child' thing way more now. I laughed, cried, and want more.

From the basic description of 'queer, fantasy, murder mystery', I knew it would basically be written for me, so I'm sure there's a bit of bias there. But I can't be the only one it speaks to, so I look forward to others finding it and loving it too.

I really liked the world it presented, and hope for more chances to flesh it out even more in other books. The little blurbs about characters at the beginning helped start things off before they were fleshed out later on.

The quirky first person narration was so much fun in the audiobook version. I know a few other reviews weren't sold on it in print, but I recommend giving listening a try before completely writing it off. Nathan Foad did such a great job with all the characters, and differing the narrator's inner and spoken thoughts so you now which was happening when. He was the reason I gave the audiobook a try before the print one. (Which I also got, but that's besides the point, lol.)

I figured out a couple of the twists, but the story still kept me wondering so I was never sure until the reveals if I was actually right. So the ride was still wrought and tense as I hoped certain characters would make it through to see the end.

TL;DR - I loved it, and if the description and buzzwords around it are of any interest to you, I can't recommend it enough. Both print and audiobook versions are great.
