About this listen

A collection of confessions from women around the world, Want is a revelatory, sensational and game-changing exploration of women’s sexuality that asks, and answers: How do women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally anonymous?

What do you want, when no one is watching?
What do you want, when the lights are off?
What do you want, when you are anonymous?

When we talk about sex, we talk about womanhood and motherhood, infidelity and exploitation, consent and respect, fairness and egalitarianism, love and hate, pleasure and pain. And yet for many reasons—some complicated, some not—so many of us don’t talk about it. Our deepest, most intimate fears and fantasies remain locked away inside of us, until someone comes along with the key.

Here’s the key.

In this generation-defining book, Gillian Anderson collects and introduces the anonymous letters of hundreds of self-identifying women from around the world (along with her own anonymous letter).

From a Sikh woman who writes about her secret lust for her brother-in-law, an Apache American woman who wants to be worshipped like a divine creature, a white British woman who just wants to be properly kissed one last time, another who likes to role play as a panther, or a Hispanic Jewish woman living in Bangladesh, for whom the pinnacle of sexual arousal is a doorknob, Want reveals how women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally anonymous.

Women being extremely blunt about their sexual fantasies with their partners. Seems to me that if their partners understood exactly what they wanted then there wouldn’t be a need for this book to exist. Communication is the key in all relationships. Gillian Anderson has taken the sexual revolution and turned it upside down on its head. Best wishes for wherever your path takes you!

The amount of bluntness and honesty throughout the book.

The vulnerability expressed aroused me as much as a single word written. I cannot recommend highly enough. 🥰

I think it's never been more important to provide safe places for women, and Gillian Anderson provides exactly that -- and gives a voice to hundreds of women about a topic that most people probably wish didn't exist. The entire world seems to be obsessed with male sexuality, and women just seem to be a supporting role in it. This book makes women and their fantasies front and center and because there are so few opportunities where women feel like they can safely share what their inner lives are about, I feel that this book is very, very important.

Groundbreaking

Loved the subject. I felt a few of the readings did not do the letters justice.

ultimately there’s maybe accumulated value here - in terms of giving “visibility” to this thoroughly female mental/physical space. and ultimately I learned things and loved the international reach of the project. however, listening to it is boring and some of the narrators (one in particular) really annoyed me.

meh - but with something gained

I call this a collection of letters to study women’s sexual fantasies. Some of the letters were common, others wild. But as someone who reads smut on the regular….many of these are written in these books, which is quite fascinating. Just should read this and smut….if you did the research then you would know.

The variation in voices telling the stories added to the enjoyment of listening. It gave it a personal touch a single reader would have lost over the course of the book.

Entertaining and educational

I find it very distracting and somewhat disturngbing that after each story they say their weight, something like, “Weight, between than 15000 pounds to 20000 pounds. The accented computerized voice that narrates the book and is supposed to be international women’s voices was not properly programmed. It blows up the sense of having people telling us their intimate stories and instead it is robots letting us know about their sexual thoughts. I don’t think this is the author’s intentions. It is very distracting, a killer for the sexy content
