About this listen

A collection of confessions from women around the world, Want is a revelatory, sensational and game-changing exploration of women’s sexuality that asks, and answers: How do women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally anonymous?

What do you want, when no one is watching?
What do you want, when the lights are off?
What do you want, when you are anonymous?

When we talk about sex, we talk about womanhood and motherhood, infidelity and exploitation, consent and respect, fairness and egalitarianism, love and hate, pleasure and pain. And yet for many reasons—some complicated, some not—so many of us don’t talk about it. Our deepest, most intimate fears and fantasies remain locked away inside of us, until someone comes along with the key.

Here’s the key.

In this generation-defining book, Gillian Anderson collects and introduces the anonymous letters of hundreds of self-identifying women from around the world (along with her own anonymous letter).

From a Sikh woman who writes about her secret lust for her brother-in-law, an Apache American woman who wants to be worshipped like a divine creature, a white British woman who just wants to be properly kissed one last time, another who likes to role play as a panther, or a Hispanic Jewish woman living in Bangladesh, for whom the pinnacle of sexual arousal is a doorknob, Want reveals how women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally anonymous.

Review

Loved the subject. I felt a few of the readings did not do the letters justice.

The amount of bluntness and honesty throughout the book.

Women being extremely blunt about their sexual fantasies with their partners. Seems to me that if their partners understood exactly what they wanted then there wouldn’t be a need for this book to exist. Communication is the key in all relationships. Gillian Anderson has taken the sexual revolution and turned it upside down on its head. Best wishes for wherever your path takes you!

Authenticity

The vulnerability expressed aroused me as much as a single word written. I cannot recommend highly enough. 🥰

Gillian goes over the top

Lots of variety, some of it titillating some of it not (personal preferences acknowledged), but the one thing I couldn't understand was why Gillian Anderson felt the need to do her narration in overwrought, gushy whispers. She sounds like she's trying too hard to sound *sexy* and it comes off as cringey and cloying. All the other narrators approach their bits straightforwardly and trust the words to deliver the impact. But Gillian's breathy, pseudo-sultry introductions and preludes sound like they're from another production, audio brought to you by Pornhub. That aside, it was a great idea to update Nancy Friday's groundbreaking work for the 21st century.

Normalizing the norm. Read Secret Garden if you think your fantasies might be “weird”

Either we’ve gone backward since My Secret Garden or Gillian and her team just aren’t nearly as brave as Nancy Friday. I’d give three stars to this if I thought it were an original idea, but them comparing this over and over again to Secret Garden cost them a star.
The fantasies are easily 75% lesbian/bisexual and very vanilla if not more romantic than erotic. The author clearly states that some fantasies were not included if they had any content that would be considered illegal. The whole point of My Secret Garden is that what gets us off isn’t necessarily what we want or what we would do. It gave comfort to those of us who have had fantasies that are highly stigmatized and would raise flags if mentioned here … but those topics are neatly avoided in this title. There are a few light bdsm fantasies, fairlytale fantasies of making love to the forest or the ocean, and some borderline infidelity fantasies … but that’s about as far as this book is willing to go. If you have relatively tame fantasies and want reassurance that yours are normal then this book will do the trick. Though if your fantasies are heterosexual, you might wonder if you’re the weird one for not having lesbian tendencies. You will definitely feel let down if My Secret Garden was as liberating and reassuring for you as it was for me.

And one more note: the demographics at the end of every single fantasy were annoying, especially the the part at the end where the narrator(s) would state the income of the contributor with apparent relish. Yuck! Do we really have to end each entry with how much money they make??

Deleting this title.
