About this listen
Undershaw was the Surrey home of Arthur Conan Doyle between 1897-1907. Built lovingly for his wife Touie to help treat her ongoing battle with tuberculosis, Arthur created a haven for his wife and family. It was here he wrote The Hound of The Baskervilles, brought Sherlock Holmes back to life in "The Empty House", and entertained guests such as writer J.M. Barrie, illustrator Sidney Paget, renowned actor William Gillette, and more. Welcome to Undershaw explores the early life of Arthur Conan Doyle through to his departure from Undershaw. You will see he was a more than just the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle was a man of adventure with a passion for chivalry and knights, theatre and politics, sports and travel.

Story
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most written about men who ever lived but despite this, some parts of his life get little attention. One such period is between 1891 and 1894 when he lived in South Norwood in present day south east London. During this period, he wrote and published much of his best work including the first two series of Sherlock Holmes short stories. This book looks at his life during this period and, in contrast to other biographies, spends time looking at some of his input into local Norwood life.

The late 1890s saw Arthur Conan Doyle return to England after several years abroad. His new house, named Undershaw, represented a fresh start, but it was also the beginning of a dramatic decade that saw him fall in love, stand for parliament, fight injustice, and be awarded a knighthood. However, for his many admirers, the most important event of that decade was the resurrection of Sherlock Holmes—the character that he felt had cast a shadow over his life.

Very interesting and informative
I found this book to be a good overview of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life and times at his home Undershaw. It’s interesting that he so disliked his most famous character Sherlock Holmes, but didn’t Agatha Christie hate Poirot? Glad to hear the Undershaw was restored. The narration was excellent.

A Touching and Informative Look at Doyle
I thought I’d picked up quite a bit of information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from the various introductions to his books, but this delightful short biography showed me how wrong I was. Doyle was a much more complicated man that I had realized. He longed for adventure but rarely found it. He hated his character Sherlock Holmes because he didn’t feel his mystery stories were quality literature. He trained as a physician but was totally unsuccessful at creating his own medical practice. And so forth…
This book is a very quick read, but it really brought Doyle to life for me as a sympathetic and interesting figure. It also introduced many of his stories and novels by showing what was happening in Doyle’s life when he wrote them. And it sets all of this around the home he had built for his chronically ill wife in a way that was both interesting and endearing. What it doesn’t do, is bring the story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle beyond his estate of Undershaw, ending the biography when he sold the family home.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

An interesting biography
As a Holmes fan this caught the my attention.
There are a few biographies of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
This one is quite short though full of interesting facts and information.. A little lite but well worth a read for anyone who is interested in the famous man. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't really a biography reader.
I received a free copy of this audio book at my request and voluntarily leave this honest review..
