About this listen

Tessa Becker has several reasons to never return to her hometown:
She will have to face the man who shattered her heart.
She is terrified to confront her ailing mother’s condition.
That is where the murders happened.

Tessa Becker must return home for one reason and one reason alone:
Someone else is dead and it’s time to finally learn the truth.

Ever since the first murder, Tessa’s once charming and safe hometown has been infected with suspicion and fear. Back then accusations were made in whispers, but without proof, the killer still walks free. And now it’s possible they’ve struck again.

If things weren’t complicated enough, Tessa finds herself forced to stay with the one man she had hoped to avoid. Years ago, Garrett Campbell held her heart until he crushed it. Now, he’s a stranger. He’s also her brother’s best friend.

In an all-too-familiar place filled with secrets and devastating loss—surrounded by people and memories she’d rather forget—Tessa will have to discover the truth about what happened back then, and the threat it poses to the town and the ones she loves most before it’s too late.

Seamlessly blurring the edges of psychological thriller and romantic suspense, million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin’s latest romantic thriller will have you hopelessly falling in love and obsessively searching for answers all in one breath.

I very much enjoyed this book, finished it in 2 days, becomes a bit PG13 at times, but the love these characters share made my heart so full, despite the challenges. Super surprised by the twist towards the end, not what I was expecting!

Kept me guessing

Great twists and kept me engaged. The narrators were fantastic. Spicy, twisty, turns, and enough humor to give it levity without taking away from the plot.

So Good!

Kiersten Modglin's "Where the Darkness Goes" is a masterfully crafted psychological thriller that captivated me from the first page. The story follows a complex city, whose dark past and inner demons are slowly revealed as the plot unfolds. Modglin's writing is atmospheric and suspenseful, perfectly capturing the eerie and foreboding tone of the story.

What struck me most about this book was the way Modglin expertly weaves together multiple plot threads, creating a complex and twisty narrative that kept me guessing until the very end. The characters are multidimensional and relatable, with their own unique motivations and flaws that drive the story forward.

The pacing is expertly handled, with a slow-burning tension that builds to a heart-pounding climax. Modglin's writing is engaging, and her ability to craft a suspenseful story is unmatched.

And, as a fun bonus, the reference to the JoJo song was a delightful surprise - it added a touch personality to the story that I thoroughly enjoyed. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, "Where the Darkness Goes" is a must-read.

So incredibly meh. I hated the characters. The main character was so whiny and honestly, not that intelligent. I ended up not caring at all what happened to her. The Garett character was just gross. Every time he talked I thought - ew. He was overbearing, obsessive, and actively hoped he got killed the whole time. I hate when authors make the love interest obsessive and call it romantic. It’s super toxic.
The story itself had some really good scenes but then dragged the rest is the time. It was definitely focused on the love story more than the suspense. In fact, most of the story took place when they were young, so it was primarily a YA novel. Every time they flashed back I said to myself “oh no, this is going to last forever”.
So disappointed. I liked how it started, but as it went on I had to actively force myself to listen to it because I spent the money! But then I found myself just yelling at the characters. I would clearly not recommend this book.

So meh. It dragged - did not like the characters.

This was a waste of a credit. It was some sort of romcom with murders thrown in as an afterthought. Based on the initial tone of the main character - almost giddy as she was on her way to her childhood best friend’s funeral I almost gave up early on. Silly is the only way I could describe it. Except for some of the sex scenes- could have been a YA book.

Silly

It seemed so very sappy and overly dramatic between the main characters and far less of a mystery than a high school romance.

It read like a high school romance novel
