Nice Victorian ladies don’t run off to find legendary lost cities. One trifling little arrest shouldn’t have cost Ellie Mallory her job, but it’s only the latest in a line of injustices facing any educated woman with archaeological ambitions. When Ellie stumbles across the map to a mysterious ancient city, she knows she’s holding her chance to revolutionize Pre-Colombian history. There’s just one teensy complication.

Story
I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus. Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god. The worst god. Hades. For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus.

She only tells "small" fortunes: whether it will hail next week; which boy the barmaid will kiss; when the cow will calve. Thus begins a search for this lost love that takes the man into middle age and on a journey between the real world and an other world—a mysterious, perhaps imaginary, walled town where unicorns roam, where a Gatekeeper determines who can enter and who must remain behind, and where shadows become untethered from their selves.

Lush and Adventurous!
I loved this second book in the What the River Knows duology! It kept me on the edge of my seat, gasping at every twist I really didn’t see coming. The “cinematography”, pacing, descriptions of food, places, and people were so rich. I adore the story and our heroine and her man. This duology is one I won’t soon forget! And I can’t wait to see what Isabel Ibañez writes next! The narrators’ performances really added a level of realism to the text and made me love the story even more.

The writing
I have a hard time staying interested in books, even when I’m actually an interested. I usually quit after the plot twist is revealed or I figure out how the ending with go. That being said I read both of these jokes cover to cover. Truly one of the most beautifully written and engaging stories I’ve ever experienced. I would scrub it from my brain for a do over again if I could. Wonderful performance as well. The accents are spot on and incredibly soothing.

let down
the story felt so half baked.. the first 2/3 of the book dragged so bad mmc is horrible and his actions unforgivable. the end is disappointing because it undermined all the power the fmc had worked to grow into ... whole story was rushed and a let down

Fun, exciting follow up to a great debut story!
This story is fun! Is it a little far-fetched? Certainly. But what fantasy isn’t? I got swept up in the drama of it all. Wished Inez was a little bit quicker on the uptake than she presents here, but we can’t have everything. Narrators were both very solid and skilled, though for some reason the low voice the female narrator attempted to give Whit was hilarious to me. Every time she used his voice to shout “Inez!” I was taken right out. But her accents and otherwise intonations were perfect.

Maybe too YA
Solid read but everything was just a little bit too convenient. Inez also got on my nerves because she played a damsel in distress too much. I understood the timeline so I didn’t expect her to be a modern 21st-century feminist, but you can’t have it both ways. At times Ibanez made Inez to be self-sufficient, but it is also wrote her character to be highly inept, a good chunk of the plot with way too much reliance on Wit.
As stated previously, the predicaments that Wit and Inez got into were too convenient solved. The ending was also nicely bowed tied and saccharin but I think this is due to the YA nature of this story.

So disappointed
I had really heights expectations for this book. I enjoyed the first one, but this was such a mess. The MMC does something despicable that would destroy a woman during that time. There are such blatant continuity errors and the timelines don’t make any kind of sense. I’m really sad because it was a great concept, but it went totally off the rails to try to make the story work.

Rushed voice acting
The character who voices Whit continually
mispronounces Lourdes. He says it like “Lowds”. I’ve noticed a few stumbles in words from the Inez voice actor as well. Kinda disappointing. Second book does not live up to the hype of the first in my opinion.
