About this listen

"Superb ... a perfect horror for our imperfect age.”–The New York Times

There’s power in a book…

They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.

Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. Under the watchful eye of the stern Miss Wellwood, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament. There’s Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to find a way to keep her baby and escape to a commune. And Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby’s father. And Holly, a wisp of a girl, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.

Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them. Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid...and it’s usually paid in blood.

In Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, the author of How to Sell a Haunted House and The Final Girl Support Group delivers another searing, completely original novel and further cements his status as a “horror master” (NPR).

Critic reviews

“Hendrix’s genius as a horror writer is his ability to develop complex, human-scale emotional arcs. He gilds these dramas with a glorious, gory layer of monsters and magic, but in his work, the uncanny exists primarily to symbolize real-world issues. His characters are complex, particularly the women, and don’t fall into the easy tropes that often plague horror stories…never before has one of his books so aptly met the moment…at turns frightening, anxiety-producing, infuriating, beautiful and sad.”–The New York Times

“Fantastic … Hendrix is a wizard at mixing together tropes of terror in thought-provoking ways.”–Minnesota Star Tribune

"There's spells, there's witches, and then there's the magic Grady Hendrix conjures up in this amazing novel."–Stephen Graham Jones, New York Times bestselling author of I Was a Teenage Slasher

Great Story

I’m a huge Hendrix fan. This story did not disappoint. Loved the characters, story, humor, empathy, anger, grief. It’s another great one.

All the things!

This book was obviously fiction but oh how I’d hoped it could be fact… I need a movie! There are few books that leave you sad they are over. This one had me! Enjoy it! Promise you it’s worth the time.

The sociological aspects of the time and how the girls survived in a helpless state.

I liked the story but felt the narration was not adequate for this book. I know Ms Howard narrates a number of books but her interpretation didn’t work, really annoying me at times and taking me out of the story.

I was excited to listen to this one but believe it would be more enjoyable as a read. My eyes don’t work as well as I would like, post transplant and medication causing blurry vision.

I gave four stars otherwise because I love Grady Hendrix’s books. I believe the issue here was simply the distraction of the narration. In fairness, perhaps her editor did not do a good job during the narration phase?

Sometimes I listen to books so fast that I kinda miss the plot altogether. This book is so good, that I listen to it at normal speed - frfr.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As with all of Grady’s amazing books, I couldn’t stop listening and ordered the physical copy. A well done story with amazing reading and acting. Truly the highlight of my month and my only sadness is that it’s over. As a woman who had her first child at 17, I related with a lot of this story…and as a practicing Wiccan at that point and now. This book hit every spot. Thank you, Grady.

Incredible!

This book exceeded any expectation I had, and since it’s Grady Hendrix the bar was high. This story felt so distant, yet so close with the fluctuation of reproductive freedoms. The story telling, the characters, everything was so well done and I felt like I was fully immersed in Fern’s frequent internal conflicts.

Great audio performance with a great storyline

You can tell the history of this era was researched. I liked how the relationships and emotional growth were shown through the storyline.
