Mikhail Roberts
Wizard of the North is the continuation of the Soul Forge Saga. In this installment, Silurian discovers that everything isn't as bad as he first thought - but the discovery of a new magic in the hostile kingdom of Kraidic threatens to destroy everything his previous quest had achieved.
Embarking upon a journey fraught with creatures and an evil he never knew existed, Silurian and his companion - one he thought long since dead - battle to return to the war-torn realm of Zephyr in a frantic attempt to rescue what remains of its people before the firestorm hits.
Silurian and his companion battle ghosts, serpents, and demons neither knew existed in a heroic attempt to restore freedom to a kingdom that would like nothing more than to see Silurian dead.

Roberts' narration was incredibly well done, regardless of this being what appears to be his first audibook. Once I heard the audio sample, I knew it'd be an easy listen. His character's voices are are disctinct, varied, and memorable, and do not even require the text to state who is speaking--each voice is that recognizable. And, dang...his dialect work is excellent. His is a "slow burn" style of narration, tasting the words, allowing Stephens' profoundly human characters, rich setting, and amazing story to shine through--leaving just enough space to let the listener process the wonderfully complete world of Soul Forge Saga. But, it clearly isn't because Roberts can't narrate quickly--it is a clear and deliberate stylistic choice, for when the action picks up, Roberts can burn through the text with a machine-gun speed, and deadly accuracy, simulating the experience of getting to the juicy "page-turner" portion of any well written fantasy novel--which, make no mistake, this work undoubtedly is.
Stephens delivers a powerful, emotional, and strangely intimate narrative, on the epic backdrop of a decimated fantasy land with a complete mythos. It is an expertly depicted fictional landscape. One can tell, even in the audiobook, that Richard H. Stephens' writing is likely the kind of fantasy novel that is most certainly accompanied by a map or two at the front of the book. And, I LOVE that.
I had no idea where the story would go, and just when I thought I had correctly predicted what one group of characters would do next, they went and did something completely different, totally thwarting and exceeding my expectations in a completely satisfying way.
Perhaps the strongest aspect of Richard H. Stephens' masterfully crafted fantasy, is his characters. And, that is a profound statement for me to make, considering how descriptive his prose is, with his staggering use of adjectives--not to mention how tight and entertaining his plot is. Without referencing the material, I can easily recite nearly all of the character's names from memory, they are that good. I would read (or listen to) these characters embarking on any adventure, any number of times, simply to see how they each uniquely overcome their obstacles, and best of all--to listen to how they banter with one another. It is the vulnerability, and relationships these characters present that make them so real, and so unforgettable. They will make you laugh, they will make you cry, and they may even make you laugh-cry.
So, after listening to The Wizard of the North, I have to bite the bullet and also listen to Soul Forge Saga all the way through, (or maybe just read the e-book, I think it's free on amazon) because I need to know how these characters interacted on their first adventure! I will miss the dulcet tones and colorfully distinct character's of Mikhail Roberts' performance, but I know I'll be hearing his voice in my head the entire way through. He's definitely going to be a narrator to watch out for in the coming years. I think he's going to be a rock-star, and I would listen to him read ANYTHING. His range is absolutely nuts. I sincerely hope he's contracted to do Book 3 of this series, as this was so well done. He reminds me of Michael Kramer, but with a more tenor centered timbre to his voice (Which makes his female character voices wildly better than most male narrators.)
Anyway, enough out of me. If you've for some reason read this far into my review, you're doing yourself a disservice by not having copped this audiobook two paragraphs ago.
Started here, and I don't regret it!
