About this listen

Gideon McCade - weighed down by memories of his previous life as a Navy SEAL and a CIA agent - has blood on his hands. He turns to his BDSM club, Catharsis, and Dominating submissives to get him through the daily grind of civilian life. Knowing his past is too much to inflict on a life partner, he keeps his connections brief and superficial. When his former life comes back to haunt him, his desire for revenge pulls him back into the shadows, darkening his hopes for a future in the light.

Temporarily sidelining his career as a tattoo artist, Sebastian Phillips works as a composite artist for the local police department. To alleviate the inescapable burden of a congenital medical condition, he immerses himself in his art and seeks the catharsis of submission. But with life weighing heavily on his shoulders and darkness encroaching, he yearns for a contract with a Dominant that sees past the protective barriers he's erected to the vulnerable submissive within.

When happenstance brings Gideon and Sebastian together, their connection is undeniable. The knowledge that they are both too damaged to form permanent bonds of love causes them to rely on an impersonal contract to fulfill their physical needs. But staying emotionally detached becomes impossible, and breaking their contract seems the only option. Will Gideon's need for vengeance and Sebastian's declining health destroy what's grown between them, or will they help each other find their way back into the light?

Contains mature themes.

My first audible

I chose this book as my first audible trial because it's one of my favorites. I was a little disappointed with the audible voice. It just wasn't a sexy voice. I wish Ms. Luna would add new books to this series.

I love it but the voice towards the end of the story isn’t the best

I mean I love the story and I have read it over again but his voice starts to get worst again the end. It starts sounding horrible and it annoys me because it sounds so cringy. Don’t get wrong I love Gideon and Sebastian but damn does the voice towards the end of the story piss off. But if you want to read it yes it’s a good read. Yes they have many problems in the story but get over it. The voice is somewhat on throughout the story so if you think you can handle it go for it.

Great book

I loved that book the first time I read it and got it in audible as soon as it was published. I think that it should have been narrated with more different tones, it's quite plain narrated and the story deserves to be narrated with more passion, showing more the feelings, the emotions of the characters. However I still recommend it

Feelings to the end

Story 3 I went in not knowing the synopsis, and bam! It had me pulled in chapter 1! Had me feeling every part of what our MC1 was going through. Had me wanting to shake MC2 as well at times, then hug him. Made the HEA so smile worthy satisfying.

Series- Overall, I enjoy the world Davis created and the narration performed by Tristan. I wasn't sure at the start of book 1, but glad I didn't stop! Will be in my relisten rotation.

From tears to cheers

It is rare for me to submit a full review but this story moved me in so many ways, I felt compelled to do so.

It took a few chapters to fully engage in the storyline but when I did, I was totally captivated by Sebastian and Gideon’s story. The author took me from heights of ecstasy with these two characters to the depths of despair. I laughed; I cried, I cheered!

Well done and well worth the read/listen. Tristen James nailed it. Thank you!!

Generally good, kinda culty

I'm a bit creeped out by this family and the indoctrination of the people in it/ surrounding it. That aspect is uncomfortable for me because it's not really acknowledged in the novel that the way they're acting is abnormal and not dramatically overbearing. Anywho, I enjoy a novel with some solid self-pitying and people with martyr complexes, so I enjoyed the experience of audio reading it in general. The characters are mostly consistent within themselves, which is nice, and the sex is mostly hot and not overdone. I just don't know about this creepily-connected family and its devoted hangers on.

Almost

Almost all the way through this very long listen I was singing its praises. “The best so far in the series”.
I love Gideon and Sebastian. The wounds they carry, their vulnerabilities, and their strength make them so appealing.
The way kink is handled in this book is fantastic. The scenes are so varied and done so well.
The writing in this book is better. The story moves along naturally and progresses through actions and dialogue rather than slipping into so much exposition like in the previous book.
It is a long book, but it never felt long. I thoroughly enjoyed this book ……..until maybe the last 10%, when it got overly sentimental, too cute by half, and fell back on telling rather than showing the story unfolding. I realize epilogues often compress events to tie a nice bow on things, but this complete shift in style along with the overly contrived and-then-everything-was-perfect, jarred me out of what had been to that point a really enjoyable journey with these characters.
I guess I would still recommend this book. There was far more I was delighted by than not, but i have to include the caveat about my disappointment in the execution of the ending. The first 90% of this book proves that the last 10% could be better.

Edit: I forgot how I felt about this series and ended up listening again to refresh before listening to the fourth book. I was overly generous when I wrote this review. On second listen, I found myself really enjoying the first third. It was well written and well paced. Then the story started meandering and bogging down. This book needed to be edited for length, not because a certain length is the “right” length, but because streamlining would keep the book moving. This book has good characters and some really great scenes, but desperately needs a re-edit to make it a good book.
