About this listen

An eye for an eye, a sin for a sin... The Pleasure Wars, Book 1

Amid all the lies and scandals that fuel Society's gossip mill, one truth has stood out: House Rothcastle and House Windbury have always hated each other. Lady Ava Windbury prays the feud will someday end, to no avail. One dreadful night, her brother accidentally causes the death of Christian Rothcastle's sister, a tragedy that leaves both men maimed.

Consumed by grief, Christian makes a grim decision. He will kidnap Lady Ava so that her family will feel the pain of loss as keenly as he feels the loss of his own sister. But once he has Ava in his clutches, desire takes unexpected hold. Even more surprising, she willingly surrenders to his every sexual whim - after haggling over the terms of giving up her virginity.

Too late, he realizes she is using her body for peace, not war. But just as their affair of revenges turns into an affair of the heart, the past rears its ugly head to take matters into its own hands...

Warning: This audiobook contains scenes of erotic seduction, sexual revenge and the healing power of love.

Hot & steamy historical romance

Typically historical romances lack steam but this one did not disappoint. I loved this story. My only complaint is the ending. It kinda just ends. There is no mention in the description that this is a book in a series so this ending was confusing. There are so many things kinda left up in the air.

spicy writing, with mediocre narration

Interesting story with a somewhat unusual set-up and plot. Spicy bedroom scenes! The narrator is ok in terms of intonation, rhythm, and perhaps accents, but is unsuccessful with masculine voices for the male characters.

Great narrator, great story

First I have to say this book has a lot of sex in it. The sex starts out as just sensuous but not relational. However as this story grows, so does the love between the characters. I thought the narrator was amazing and I hardly ever completely like the narrator. So that is a big bonus for me with this book. The book ends realistically, not everyone is happy. The hero and heroine live happily ever after but the heroine's brother still has many struggles ahead of him. I see a sequel to this book and am anxious to read Liam's tale.

Jess Michaels does a good job with this story line. Morag Sims was a great narrator.

Really great!

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the first half was better than the latter. I liked that there was a lot of steam and no angst! She was a strong character but not so headstrong that I wanted to hate her like a lot of other females in other books. The ending was a little abrupt for me. Worth the credit. Narration was great as well.

This book was "meh" for me

I did not enjoy the narration of this book. I stopped at an hour and a half left of the book. I tried restarting it today (1/15/20) after taking roughly a three week break. As soon as the narrator started speaking, I clicked out of it again, I am sure like any other historical romance book they will end up together, so I am not going to bother finishing it.

not much plot

I guess this is the book for you if your into erotica. The sex is pretty explicit and quite detailed but not much development with the characters and plot.

Exciting & Romantic

Excellent variation on the Romeo and Juliet theme. The families of the H & h have a long-standing feud. The hero attempts to avenge the accidental death of his sister, which occurred in the presence of the heroine’s brother, by kidnapping the heroine. He knows this will ruin her and bring shame to her family. That is where the romance begins.
The heroine was an interesting mix of innocence, inner strength, and compassion. I liked the hero’s complexity. He comes across as harsh and unyielding but from the beginning we see flashes of his innate kindness underneath the anger.
The story is well paced and moves along had a good clip. I particularly enjoyed the lack of tedious inner musings or contrived misunderstandings.
As much as I appreciate a steamy romance, a few of the sex scenes could have been cut. At one point I felt like I was reading the Kama Sutra. Truly, it’s not necessary to demonstrate every sexual position known to mankind; i.e. reverse cowboy. I would have liked to see a little more complexity in the character of the heroine’s brother. And I definitely would have enjoyed an epilogue to answer questions like “Was the heroine pregnant?” or “Does her brother ever speak to her again?” “Did they end up going to Gretna Green?“ And one small point of disagreement with Ms. Michaels about the wedding, I think the reading of the banns and a wedding at St. George’s would serve much better to quiet the ton’s gossip than a trip to Gretna.
