11 Effective Strategies for Teaching Math to Students Who Have Given Up on Learning: Student Engagement Techniques That Motivate Students with Special Needs and Ignite Excitement for Every Student in the Classroom to Be Successful by Jordan B. Smith Jr. EdD.

Motivating teenagers to learn is a tough job.... Motivating them to enjoy math is harder than the Riemann hypothesis!

Math has certainly gotten a bad reputation for being a subject that involves endless calculations and problems that will never be used in the real world, especially now that we all walk around with calculators in our pockets!

But the fact is that math is required in multiple areas of an adult’s life, from preparing recipes to managing finances, and that’s without a career in STEM.

Neurodivergent students have even more of a difficult time with math as it can take more time and effort to understand complex concepts.

At the same time, as students with special needs have significant difficulties with transitions, math is more important for them to make sense of the world and thrive as adults.

While students have challenges learning and enjoying math, the special needs math teacher faces a wide range of obstacles–a severe lack of resources, guidance, and effective teaching strategies.

You have some help, though. In this guide to teaching math to students who need additional support, you will discover:

  • How to create a community classroom where all students feel valued, connected, and safe
  • Twenty-one of the best manipulatives your math classroom needs
  • How to extrinsically and intrinsically motivate your high school students to study and learn math
  • What it takes for students to overcome mistake anxiety, develop a growth mindset, and become confident in the classroom
  • Fifteen apps to bring technology into the classroom and increase engagement in a way that is natural for students today
  • Why students need real-world examples in math and how to keep it real with math
  • Techniques to introduce peer-based learning to change the dynamics of your class
  • How to implement proven strategies such as CVA and schema-based instruction to improve your math class
  • Why you need to use the correct math vocabulary, plus a bonus detailed vocabulary list to have handy in class
  • Six techniques to help your students retain information that doesn’t require hours of traditional studying and revision
  • A step-by-step guide to creating your lesson plans and where to find the best resources for diverse activities across all math topics
  • And much more.

As a special needs teacher, your time is already limited. From meetings to paperwork, there is little time left for actual teaching. Do you really have time to do more?

These 11 strategies aren’t about doing more. It’s about getting the most out of your students in the most effective and practical way. They will enable students to develop a deep love of math and skills they can take with them for other subjects and into adulthood.

For teachers of special needs students, this is the best gift you can give your students.

WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS A KID?

Dr. Jordan Smith’s “11 Effective Strategies for Teaching Math to Students Who Have Given Up on Learning” would have worked wonders for me back in the day. I hit the stone wall with algebra, was totally confused, got no help from the teacher or anyone else, and just basically gave up. It soured me on math for years until it became an essential part of my life as a pilot.
This book details how real-world examples can be utilized to increase student engagement while utilizing practical, effective strategies for teachers dealing with special needs students. If someone could have simply pointed out to me HOW algebra was important to know, along with a few practical examples, I believe that would have made a real difference.
This book is a powerful and effective tool for teachers to begin making a difference right now without increasing their workload. I especially appreciated the memory retention techniques, as having the various formulae and procedures memory-locked gives any student a potent leg up with math. There’s even a section on an assortment of apps for math students, which is sure to hit home with our digitally-centered youth.
If you’re a math teacher, especially if you’re teaching special-needs students, or if you simply want a fresh perspective on approaching and utilizing math in your life, this book is for you.
Highly recommended

Never Give Up On Math

Math has always been a fear and struggle for some students, and it doesn't have to be. The strategies outlined in this audiobook make learning math fun and relatable. The students can easily engage at their current level to improve their math skills. The author shows how learning math through the established strategies crosses most subjects that students will also improve in. This, in turn, builds confidence and empowers students. Students need to be excited about learning so they don't give up, and that is precisely the foundation of the impact brought about by the engagement techniques shared by the author. I recommend this math audiobook for all students and especially for those that need to get back on track in math studies or need a refresher in learning math.

Practical and Effective

What is so great about this book is that Dr. Smith clearly has years of experience as a math teacher working with diverse students. He provides very methodical advice with lots of examples that makes it easier to digest. I think this would be a great book to give to entire middle school math, high school math and special education departments. They could learn so much and boost student outcomes if they only implemented a few of his strategies. Obviously the goal is to implement all of them, but that takes time. This book is a great read and study.

Become the teacher they never forget

As a parent of a child with special needs, I found this book both informative and heartwarming. My son is very smart, but he doesn’t learn the same way other kids do. When he first started school he had very low grades and the teachers thought because of his disability he wasn’t capable of learning a lot of the things they were teaching. Long story short, I disagreed and now he’s at a different school. Now he has a teacher who actually sees what he is capable of. She teaches him in the way that HE LEARNS and he is doing so much better in school now!

I truly admire and adore teachers who adapt their methods to best fit the children they are teaching. Not only does that help students learn the material better, but it improves their self-confidence and the belief that they are capable of accomplishing things. It better prepares them for a happy and fulfilling life.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be one of those true difference-maker teachers. For these kids, it’s not just about learning math. It’s about feeling worthy and capable and learning how to live a fulfilling and happy life.

Revitalize their love of learning math

Dr. Jordan Smith's emphasis on creating a positive and encouraging environment was especially impactful for me. So many students associate math with failure and frustration, but this audiobook helped me find ways to teach students to see that growth and progress are just as important as getting the right answer.

Dr. Smith's emphasis on providing opportunities for student choice was refreshing. Lots of students struggle with being forced into certain solving certain problems, but given the opportunity to have a choice of doing one problem over others can provide that sense of autonomy and motivation to help the student finish and solve the problem, which I completely agree with. I am excited to try out this strategy and many of Dr. Smith’s other strategies. They were all extremely easy to comprehend and implement.

I also have to mention the narrator, who did an exceptional job with the performance. Their voice was easy to listen to, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Overall, "11 Effective Strategies for Teaching Math to Students Who Have Given Up on Learning" is a must-listen for anyone who wants to improve their ability to teaching math. The main takeaway that teachers should create a positive and supportive environment, incorporate real-world examples, and provide opportunities for student choice. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who wants to transform their approach to teaching math.

Wonderful education resource

Overall a strong resource for teachers, educators, and parents working with children who are struggling with mathematics. The author does a great job of breaking down strategies across different disciplines, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and even provides lesson layouts to apply. Most appreciated was the approach the author took in explaining the lesson content, so that it was also digestible for non formal educators, including parents of homeschooled students. The narrator was engaging and easy to follow, looking forward to employing these strategies with my kids moving forward.
