About this listen

Discover Alter, the number one Audible best seller and be prepared to ask yourself, "To survive being lost in the Amazon, what would I...become?"

Stranded in the Amazon rainforest, a lost man fights for survival and discovers that the root of evil doesn’t just reside in the world’s darkest corners, but inside the hearts of all mankind. Dr. Gregory Zekser is on a mission to visit the furthest reaches of the Amazon, providing medical aid to recently contacted tribes.

As a general practitioner and food pantry director, his life in Massachusetts can be chaotic, but serving people is what he does best, and he doesn’t mind sacrificing his personal life to help others, at home or halfway around the world. But any hope of returning home to his wife, daughter, and comfortable life are eradicated when the small plane carrying him back to civilization plummets into the unknown depths of the jungle.

Swallowed by endless green, with both pilots dead, Greg struggles to stay alive in a world that wants to infect his body, suck him dry, and eat him whole. Ravaged by illness and dehydration, and stalked by a ruthless predator, Greg’s life teeters on the edge of oblivion until a scream lets him know that he is not alone.

His first encounter with an uncontacted tribe ends in death - the first of many. Driven to the brink of madness, and then beyond, Greg finds himself caught up in a feud that existed before his arrival, but will only end with his death - or his enemies’.

International best-selling author, Jeremy Robinson, the master of taking creative and original concepts and fusing them with realistic and emotive characters, explores the depths to which a man can descend, and what it takes to climb back out.

A nice change of pace.

This was a really nice change of pace. I decided to listen to this book largely because it sounded really exciting. I am not going to lie though, the fact that Luke Daniels did the narration was a huge part of the decision. It was a good choice. This book was a little different than the books that I normally read and I had a lot of fun with it. I am really glad that I took a chance on this one.

Dr. Gregory Zekser is the only survivor when the plan he is on crashes in the rainforest. He quickly learns that he is not prepared to survive on his own in that environment. His supplies are very limited and he is not ready to deal with some of the dangers in the rainforest. There were a few points in the story where things looked really bad for Dr. Zekser and I wasn't sure if he would make it out of this ordeal.

I liked Greg's character. He is put in a really desperate situation and somehow finds his strength. He is put in terrible situations many times over the course of the story and each time we get to see his internal struggle as he makes difficult choices. It was interesting to see how much his character changed over the course of the story.

This was a rather exciting story with a lot of action. It was probably a bit far fetched at times but it was entertaining so I had no problem with that. I am still not sure that I liked the direction the story took towards the end but I understood why the author made that choice. I liked the fact that this was really a story where anything could happen.

Luke Daniels did an amazing job with the narration. He is easily one of my favorite narrators and this book is a perfect example of the quality of his work. He handled a variety of voices very well and added a lot of excitement to the story. I believe that I enjoyed this one more because I made the decision to go with the audiobook.

I would recommend this book to others. This was an exciting story about a man who is put in a difficult situation and is forced to learn exactly what he is capable of. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of Jeremy Robinson's work.

Insanely good and sometimes mood altering story!

I really, really enjoyed this book! It's one of those highly addicting, binge producing novels that you can't wait to see what happens, but never want it to end!
A mild mannered physician crashes in the Amazon jungle, on the way to do some volunteer work. He nearly loses his life, multiple times, finds a new way of life, a new love and although the story itself is not funny, per se, the author has a way to make the main characters thoughts and actions hilarious! This book shows how being in different surroundings and different people can change you inside, never to be quite the same again.
One of the things that made this audiobook even better, was the narrator, Luke Daniels. He knows what he is doing. I haven't a clue how he pulled it off, but he is one of the best I have ever listened to. He knows how to put the exact amount of humor and emotion in to each character to make them come alive!
Five HUGE stars for this one!!

parts are not realistic, even for fiction. that kept it from being really good. interesting concept to think about, but seems like author just breezed over some stuff that should have taken longer or been explained a bit better.

First Half Was Real Good

This is one of the top ten narrators so he was great. The first half of the book was very good but the second half of the book went a little out there, I think maybe the writer smoked a little too much of what our hero was using.

Holy crap

What did I just read? This is intense, elaborate and psychologically thrilling. I couldn't put it down. I'm speechless about everything that happens in the last 3 hours...

First half yes; 2nd half no

Good adventure of survival in the jungle in the first half. Some funny moments. The second half is just bizarre and weird and dark and gory…Not a “feel good” story, kind of pointless IMO. I’m sure some people would like it but it’s not for me. Good ending. Good narrator.

Unexpected

Interesting story. Man crashes in the deep of Amazon's jungle & survives. Man saves strange tribal woman. Woman saves man from starvation & dehydration. Their relationship begins with revenge & violence but grows into mutual love & respect for each other. From the title & story description , I expected a more "scientific" alteration of the main character. Essentially, it was a de-evolution of the man's personality into a primal way of surviving. Fascinating story. As always, Luke Daniels did a fantastic job narrating.

Wow - not what I was expecting

Based on the plot outline of this book on Audible, it didn't seem like a book I'd enjoy. However, I gave it a try based on two things: 1) I enjoyed Jeremy Robinson's book "The Others" and 2) I enjoyed Luke Daniels' performance in one of the Galaxy's Edge novels. This book was so much more than I thought it'd be. It was exciting, depressing, thoughtful, funny, tense, heartwarming, sad... and somehow mostly believable. I got my credit's worth with this one.

This was a thought provoking listen. A little sluggish in the middle, but enough intrigue to keep me until the end.
