About this listen

When the President said to immerse ourselves in the project, this was NOT what I had in mind!

I really should’ve taken the publisher’s employment contract more seriously…

Rachel and her best friend Nora never imagined their first job at a publishing company would catapult them into the heart of their favorite fantasy web novel. Five years after the story's abrupt hiatus left fans in limbo, they seize the chance to help the enigmatic author complete the tale that had captivated their hearts during their high school days. But what begins as an exciting creative endeavor quickly spirals into a quirky, unimaginable adventure when they're whisked away without consent into the very story they longed to save. Now, the two will get firsthand experience dealing with the destructive demon lord who betrayed and banished the heroine during the story's original cliffhanger.

But what if he isn't the card-carrying villain everyone else seems to think he is?

This is a story that likes to poke fun at itself, the isekai genre, and the hero's journey. It does it very well, and the back and forth between the characters and "the author" is clever and enjoyable. The section in Chapter 17 had me cracking up while driving. it also has a lot of intent with how it plays with these ideas and uses them to look at the systems in the world and why they are put together that way, to explore the human costs such things demand.

Then to top things off, this story has Tess Irondale reading it. Like always, she brings great emotion and voice to the characters, but she really nails the comedic timing for this story.

A fun comedy with heart

I had this title recommended to me by several people, and I'm so glad I finally listened to them. I love the world(s?) Euphridia has created here, and the characters feel real and dynamic, like I could turn around and have a conversation with one of them. Tess Ironwood especially does a great job of bringing these characters to life with her voicework. I like when an author can combine satire and comedy with drama and get a plot that both makes you think and brings you enjoyment. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it's over. Definitely give this one a read.
