The brightest of stars are always born on the darkest of nights.
Serena Smith is unusual. Growing up in a backwoods village, her life is lonely and dull. Then, on her 18th birthday, she's gifted a magical heirloom only to be snatched by fae and condemned to a lifetime in chains.
Dragged to Aldar, a fae kingdom ruled by a tyrant witch, Serena discovers a forbidden love and meets fellow outcasts, each with their own dark secrets.
As the lives of warriors, rebels, and witches clash, they find a shared destiny. For only together, and with Serena's unique gifts, can they survive long enough to build the flames of a revolution. Only together can they go to war....
From the author of Draken comes this explosive new fantasy series with lots of heart and a sting in its tail.

This book was such a surprise. Once she'd taken the little involuntary trip I couldn't stop listening. It's a perfect first book in a series. I can't wait for the next one!
A pleasant surprise!

Performance was believable. The narrator did a great job of giving each character a unique voice so you could tell who was talking.
Characters are believable and have depth. Looking forward to the next book.

Before I go into what I like about it, I wanted to bring attention to comments about Serena not thinking for herself or being whiny. Dude, she’s a young adult who has almost zero self esteem due to abuse and has been dropped forcibly into a world she doesn’t understand and doesn’t have the coping skills or support system she needs to survive. But she trudges on. Learning to have confidence and not let the world crush you isn’t easy. And I relate to this. I also relate to how her odd group of friends help her in different ways. Some friends are overprotective. Some challenge you. Some just show up in your life like some kind of miracle during the worst of times. In some ways, her group of misfits reminds me of Stephen King. His ‘losers clubs’. He has them in a few of his books. And I like that element in his writing as well as here.
There is a lot of talking in this book. If you hate inner dialog, this isn’t the droid you’re looking for. I happen to like it as it shows the characters developing in their own ways. There’s still action, intrigue, betrayal, and romance. Humor as well. And non of that is enjoyable unless you understand the pieces in play on the board.
Anyways, I have no idea if this is the kind of review that will really make potential readers begrudgingly buy 3 more credits. Yes, fantasy with romance has been done before. But the world of Fairy in this book isn’t the same as other authors, like SJM. At least, not in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong. I love her. But I also REALLY loved this book’s version of Fairy in a different way.
I loved the world building, the characters, and am excited for the next book! Which I’m starting NOW. The only thing I really don’t like is that The 3rd book isn’t out already. 😉
I hope you give the book a chance. I especially think this book will resonate with people who have struggled with self esteem, felling alone, or have survived trauma. I don’t think this book needs trigger warnings though. More like the book needs indicators that it might vibe with a certain demographic. And maybe remind you that you’re stronger than you think. Xo
I really quite enjoyed this.
