About this listen

Forced to marry an American heiress to save his family, Graeme Parr, Earl of Montclair, vowed their marriage would be in name only. Abigail Price thought handsome, aristocratic Graeme was her knight in shining armor, rescuing her from her overbearing father. But when she was spurned by her husband on their wedding night, Abigail fled home to New York.

Now, years later, Abigail has returned. But this sophisticated, alluring woman is not the drab girl Graeme remembers. Appalled by her bold American ways but drawn to her beauty, Graeme follows her on a merry chase through London's elegant ballrooms to its dockside taverns - why is his wife back? What could she want of him now?

Torn between desire and suspicion, Graeme fears that Abby, like her unprincipled father, has a devious plan to ruin him. But is Abigail's true desire Graeme's destruction...or winning his love at last?

He wasn’t always a perfect gentleman

But by the end he had become one. Very good plot. Fun characters. Nice narrative. Good voice. Liked very much.

Good HEA

I love a good love story and happily ever after! The characters were well developed and engaging. I liked the suspense and twist at the end. The narrator sometimes blended people’s “voices” together so they sounded similar but overall did well.

Great story and great narrator.

Gildart Jackson is the first narrator I've found whose American accent didn't leave me wanting to rip my ears off. Yes, that's dramatic but holy hell, some narrators think we sound atrocious.

I like the story and it only seemed a bit too slow on occasion...I found the writing to be reminiscent of Georgette Heyer and she is one of my favorite authors so I have few complaints. This was a really great book.

Loved it!

I’m surprised with the lukewarm reviews after reading this. I thought it was fantastic. With some of these period romances they drag on and have long boring spells, too many repetitive love scenes.. this had the perfect amount and moved along at a nice clip overall, with a bit of mystery that had me wondering until the end. I laughed out loud scaring my dogs with some of the unexpected humor.

If there was one negative it was trying to get the correct speed for the narrator, sometimes I needed to slow him down but most of the time had to speed him up. Otherwise he was great.

Not my favorite but I did finish

The story was ok but it took me awhile to get through it as I couldn’t vibe with the narration.

Predictable story and the narrator was only strong with male characters.

I am a devoted fan of Candace Camp after reading all of the Mad Moreland series. The MM books were complicated, well researched, and super engaging and just fun to read. In my opinion, this narrator did not come close to the excellence presented by the narrator (Will Thorne) of the MM series. I made it to the end but was disappointed.

Should be a novella

I liked the mystery part of the plot, but the two main characters were so whiny and insecure. They each had to internally debate and review and mull over each little interaction and then, of course, come up with a stupid and wrongheaded deduction. I would have edited this book by at least half.

I am surprised that I didn't strain my eyes by rolling them so much!

Easy listen

The story had a continuous flow. I enjoyed it. read a few reviews that said it was too much sex and it was graphic. It took them half the book to even get close and the encounters were not graphic. Not sure what kind of romance novels those people were use to reading. I need the heat in mine. The narrator was entertaining. I read/listen to her again.

A Perfect Romance

The prologue grabbed my heart and squeezed. I listened to at least a quarter of the story before I could set the book aside and go to sleep. Two brilliantly drawn main characters and a mystery within the romance, make for a compulsively entertaining story.
I wish this book had both a female and a male narrator. The narration is great, but having a truly feminine American voice for Abby, would have been better still.

Good; not great

This was a very nice book. I liked the characters, the setting, and the plot. It did not, however, have the depth that I have come to prefer in HR.

Gildart Jackson narrated, and he is quite good. He is a bit weak on female characters, but his males are simply delicious.

I enjoyed the book, but I'm not likely to listen again.
