About this listen

The thrilling third entry in the high fantasy saga that started with BookTok sensation A Broken Blade.

It seems fate has dealt me the same hand again. I know how to play it.

A new king is on the throne and the rebellion lies in ruins. Keera spends her days drinking and her nights avoiding the strange dreams that have haunted her since she returned from the capital.

Keera’s family in Myrelinth won’t let her go without a fight. With new intelligence about the magical seals left behind by Keera’s ancient kin, the Light Fae, she rallies to face her demons and unleash the formidable powers she inherited from her people. But a shocking truth is hiding in plain sight, one with the power to unravel the entire rebellion …

The pivotal third installment in the Halfling Saga will upend everything Keera thought she knew about her enemies … and her allies.

The third entry in the Halfling Saga, the epic tale of a deadly assassin with a mysterious past, set in a lush fantasy world of Mortals, Elves, Halflings, and Fae, A Vicious Game is perfect for listeners who enjoyed the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and other romantic fantasy books, especially those seeking LGBTQ+ romance or BIPOC representation.

The plot twist!!

This series is absolutely stunning! The third book has been the best one yet. So far the halfling saga series has been my favorite read of the year.

This amazing story has continued beautifully! I preordered this book as soon as I completed the first two and this one did not disappoint! It’s the perfect blend of fantasy, romance, action and mystery! I am enthralled and #4 can’t get here fast enough!

very slow at first. Loved the plot twists and ending left me wanting more. I can't wait till the next book. Very good use of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey style.

Plot twist

Well, this had some information I wasn’t expecting. The end is open for another book, but not with a cliffhanger that makes you want to scream because you have to wait a year for it to release.

I thought that this was going to be the last book in this trilogy, so imagine my surprise when I realized that we were getting to the very end of the book and there were many, many things that were not yet resolved. I'm actually not even sure how I feel about that.....

So, there is a HUGE twist that is thrown out near the end of this book and if I'm being completely honest, it came as a complete surprise to me. Not only did it throw me for a complete loop, but it also made me have to start going back over the many, many past situations and occurrences and have to rethink these things from a new and different perspective. Even doing that, I'm still not sure how I feel about this revelation. I'm actually quite pissed, to be honest....

To me, this book was the weakest of the three. I felt like the story tended to drag at several sections of the book. The beginning drove me ABSOLUTELY CRAZY. I've mentioned before that I have a huge problem with MC's who get into these "woe is me" spirals. Now, to be fair, there are times when guilt spirals are warranted, but Keera has spent quite a bit of time in this trilogy spiraling and drowning in her self imposed guilt. Now, I do understand her reasons for those feelings, but it is very clear that drowning yourself in alcohol as a crutch to "not have to feel" (or dream) is not a valid long term solution. PLUS, there were things that she really should have told SOMEONE. I mean, she didn't have to tell everyone, but she could have at least told one or two people - Riven and Syrra come to mind. So many problems might have been averted, but......let's move on before I get annoyed again.

Another thing that bothered me - and this is going to be hard to completely articulate without going into spoilers - but somehow Damien becomes almost omniscient. He all of a sudden seems to have the ability, well honestly, he seems to have suddenly developed ALL kinds of new abilities, but the one I'm talking about is the ability to have eyes everywhere and somehow see and know everything - even before our group does. Remember, our group has been finding out the things they are finding out because the people in their group are the ones that these new revelations revolve around. Yet, the minute they figure something out, somehow Damien is a step ahead. Okay, I'm going to end my rant here.

This book ends in another cliffhanger. Was it one of those cliffhangers that completely leave you hanging? No, not really. But, it does introduce another new surprise and another jaw dropper.

So - I guess we now wait for book 4. I'm hoping that book 4 takes us back in the direction that we were at in books one and two. We can only hope.....
