I have recently gotten into Lisa Jewell. This is the 4th book of hers in a row that I’ve listened to. As usual, wonderful characterization and storytelling. I liked that this book had a different tone than the others, demonstrating that Lisa isn’t a one trick pony. My only criticism is that, while the protagonists were well-developed, I just didn’t like them very much. Ralph and Jem had some significant shortcomings as people, and their relationship was quite toxic at times. It made it hard to root for their success. Overall, though, I liked the book. Enjoyable listen.

A bit lacking. Characters are well developed but just didn’t hit the right note for me.

As always Lisa Jewell creates characters that are so easy to love! Such a great book. I didn’t want it to end!!

Absolutely love Lisa Jewell, and her writing! Such a lovely story that I loved listening to in the quiet with a glass of wine!

Love it! Love it!

Love the book. Enjoy the rabbit trails. Characterization great. Dramatic. I recommend. Especially enjoy the British accent on audible.

Because the author often writes mysteries and thrillers, I was surprised to find myself immersed in a story about two characters that love each other but have lost their way. If you like stories that are character rich, this is it. It unfolds at an even pace although I did speed it up a bit. Helen Duff was the perfect choice to narrate this story. Her diction, accent and melodious tone of voice was so pleasant to listen to, and she did an excellent job differentiating the male and female characters. I will seek other books from her. Jem and Ralph were flawed but I still cared for them and was glad they were not beyond redemption. I found the dynamics of family life to be authentic, and the story took many unexpected turns that kept me intrigued. I loved every minute of it and intend to read more from this author. I highly recommend this book.

Fresh and original story

I love Lisa Jewell. She’s a talented writer and an excellent story teller. This book is no exception…the story is just painfully boring. This is one of her earlier works, and her style carries across her stories—her writing style is the only thing that kept my attention in this book.

Spoilers: If you’re 30s+, you’ve seen this. Boy and girl are young and in love. They build a life together: house, pet, couple of kids. They become complacent and stop communicating. They develop different interests. They grow apart. Add in resentment, younger love/lust interests, secrecy, trusting in someone of the opposite sex, and a spiritual awakening (rivaled by spiritual resistance), and that’s the story.
Oh, and they make up; somehow it’s all fine because they missed each other and just return to their (honestly, shaky) roots.

Almost didn’t finish…

I almost didn't buy this book because I read some really bad reviews about it...but being a huge Lisa Jewel fan and this was the only book of hers I hadn't read so... I really loved it and I should not have doubted her. she captures the nature of relationships and true love in a such raw and realistic way. I could relate to this story so much and it gave me a new understanding of myself and my relationship with my husband. it made me think ahh...so these thoughts, desires, and feelings aren't abnormal.

Glad I gave it a chance
