About this listen

Lydia, Dean, and Robyn don't know one another...yet. Each is facing difficult challenges: Lydia is still wearing the scars from her traumatic childhood. Wealthy and successful, she leads a lonely and disjointed existence. Dean is a young, unemployed, single dad whose life is going nowhere. Robyn is 18. Gorgeous, popular, and intelligent, she entered her first year of college confident about her dream to become a pediatrician. Now she's failing her classes. Now she's falling in love for the first time.

Lydia, Dean, and Robyn live very different lives, but each of them, independently, has always felt that something was missing. What they don't know is that a letter is about to arrive that will turn their lives upside down. It's a letter containing a secret - one that will bind them together and show them what love and family and friendship really mean.

A literary gem, The Making of Us will remind listeners of the miracles that happen when we bring life into the world and share our lives with those we love.

A touching story of the complexities of our connections to our past, human emotion, and what it means to be family. Near the end of the book, I realized the slow start was necessary to explain all of the details of each character’s story. Another good book from Lisa Jewell and wonderful narration by Helen Duff.

Slow start, good finish

I enjoyed this book. The accents were distinguishable. I noticed references for American listeners. I assume the British version does not do this.

it was just okay. Had a hard time paying attention. the voice of the brother was terrible - he sounded stupid. I wouldnt recommend.

meh, found it fairly boring

I enjoyed the story, but I was waiting for some kind of momentous twist and it just kept plugging along and then tied up in a happy little ending. But I enjoyed the characters.

Not one of Lisa Jewell's best, but entertaining.

This book was recommended to me based on other books I’ve purchased. I figured I’d give it a go.

Turns out that The topic is very personal for me as I too dealt with the subject matter.

The writer captured the feelings and thoughts so well.

The performance was so good that I forgot there was only one narrator. There are a lot of people in this story and she made each one feel like their own person. Very talented.

I miss the characters and hope there are more stories about them 😊.

Wonderful. I miss the characters now that I’ve finished the book

The ending made me cry (in a good way!) when normally they just make me wish for a different ending. It wasn't a huge twist or anything, but a human story that touches you where it matters and the author ties it all up with a perfect bow. :) One of my favorites so far.

Wonderful narrator and heartfelt characters

I loved the reader, she did a great job with the voiceover. I loved the story. I’m not sure if the character development was fully believable but the writing was eloquent and beautiful. The mystery and how the story unfolded was beautiful. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful story that captures your curiosity

I enjoyed every second of this book. The character development was great. The story was interesting and engaging and above all else it has a wonderful ending. Buy it!

Fabulous! You will love it.

I haven't been disappointed with this author yet! This book winds the lives of 3 strangers together in a very unusual way. On the surface it may seem contrived but the way it plays out is really organic. I enjoyed it and will move on to my next Lisa Jewell read (listen).

I love this author!
