Publisher's summary

A deadly mission to an uncharted world riddled with ancient secrets.

On his last job, Cade Korbin lost his ship, lost his credits, and barely escaped with his life. But it’s not over. His enemy is still out there, nursing a decades-old vendetta, and now his guild is coming after him for breaking their rules.

Cade desperately needs credits and somewhere to lie low for a while. To that end, he takes a job on an uncharted world, code-named Nexus, to rescue a team of missing researchers and to recover the alien artifacts that they went searching for. But Nexus proves to be far deadlier than even its class-five hazard rating would suggest, and Cade realizes that he’ll be lucky to escape with his life, let alone accomplish the mission. Yet unknown to Cade, there is a danger on Nexus that goes far beyond the alien monsters that prowl its surface: A terrifying menace has been waiting for untold eons to emerge.

And Cade Korbin is just about to wake it up.

I liked book 1 better

I'm confused with the story and opportunities wasted in this book. If a certain badygal pretending to he someone else the whole time simply could have ordered the rescue craft leave them on Nexus. Now, I didn't expect a main character to be one the girls killed. So the prior book she had essentially two daughters feeding her information. Let me stop, revealing too much but this book story was not good. Felt rushed at points and didn't explain how certain events happened. I mean did the clones know they were clones? Anywho, a 3.5, gave it a 4 for good voice acting.

Fun and engaging!

I think I liked the first book better but this did it justice as a sequel and I’m looking forward to the third installment. The main character Cade narrates in a rather campy way. Often there are almost cliche lines but I’ve grown fond of them given Cade’s Southern drawl. The performance by Luke Daniels is always wonderful.

A great continuation of the story

Like the first book it’s imaginative, suspenseful and has a solid twist at the end.

Non stop life or death action, no pause to breath.. A breather would be nice.. Never feels like anything is really important... its all cursory

Luke Daniels killin it! Sci-Fi at its best!

This is my new favorite series! The first was awesome and the second stepped it up. The best part, it wasnt redundant or a rehash of the first plot. Entirely new story with new characters… or not ;) I love any sci-fi narration from Luke Daniels. I don’t think he gets enough credit… his female voices could use the tiniest bit of practice, but without a doubt in my top 3. This is my first series with Jasper T Scott and I’m definitely going to check out his other works.

The story had some really good plot twists I didn’t see coming and keeps you guessing to the very end. I really enjoyed the characters relationship between his daughter and earning the respect of the other soldiers. Scott did an amazing job writing a story with large implications, but not making you think every action by the protagonist will blow the universe. It was a little more reasonable and I liked that.

Can’t wait for the next one!

Now LitRPG

I'm not into LitRPG stories. Too formulaic for me. Too much character restriction. But! Obviously there's a large audience for it. If you're into LitRPG, you're going to like this book. There's monsters galore and dangerous terrain to cross to reach the end goal. But if you were looking for a story? You'll be disappointed.

Gone is the savvy ex-Paladin bounty hunter, whose experience, cunning and intelligence got him through many a tight spot on an intriguing adventure with interesting world building in the first book. My worries early in The Bounty Hunter, when the flashback to his military service laid it on thick, are realized in Alien Artifacts, the second installment of the Cade Korbin Chronicles.

Alien Artifacts has a heavy handed narrative throughout the book and marches in place with repetitive scenarios. The formerly sharp witted characters are dumbed down and made purposely obtuse to enable the various plot devices in the story. (I hate when an author does this.) Cade just can't figure things out. He talks about that a lot. How he can't figure anything out. And no one else can either.

I kept waiting for the story to advance, bored when yet another threat (that no one's prepared for, despite numerous training runs) resets everything to square one, with no one recognizing that's what's happening. It's rinse and repeat, again and again (and again) and then (finally!) late in Alien Artifacts Cade starts figuring things out, to end on a cliff hanger.

So annoying.

I'll give the third book a listen, but if it's another weak plot like this one, I'm out.

Luke Daniel's narration is good throughout.
