About this listen

Written by one of the world's leading authorities and hailed by American Brewer as "brilliant" and "by a wide margin the best reference now available," Beer offers an amusing and informative account of the art and science of brewing, examining the history of brewing, and how the brewing process has evolved through the ages.

The third edition features more information concerning the history of beer, especially in the United States; British, Japanese, and Egyptian beer; beer in the context of health and nutrition; and the various styles of beer. Author Charles Bamforth has also added detailed information on prohibition, Sierra Nevada, life as a maltster, hopgrowing in the northwestern US, and how cans and bottles are made. Finally, the audiobook includes new sections on beer in relation to food; contrasting attitudes towards beer in Europe and America; how beer is marketed, distributed, and retailed in the US; and modern ways of dealing with yeast.

Overly technical

Learned some useful information and obviously the author knows his stuff, but a large percentage of the book was so technical that it was like listening to someone read an instruction manual. Also contains a lot of information regarding large scale brewing which, to me at least, is far less interesting than small scale brewing. Performance was fine if a bit dry, but overall the book was a slog to finish.

Amazingly detailed walk thru Brewing

The book is exceptionally technical and I now seek to purchase the paper copy so I may use it to highlight and truly learn. My appreciation for the complexity of the organic nature of beer is greatly heightened. A difficult listen though do the the technical chemical knowledge shared if you are a novice. Plus the narrator is dry dry dry!
But you do want to study more and this is a good introduction to how much is left to learn.

Professor Bamforth is Great

I enjoyed this audiobook. It provides the listener with a nice overview of the industry, the process, and the science.
I wasn't a fan of the narration, he sounds very computer-like to me, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't finish the book.
I've listened to all of Bamforth's audiobooks and prefer Brewmaster's Art as it goes through the process and ingredients in greater detail. It's also read by the author. Beer is Proof that God Loves Us is also great. Those two together will offer both facts and insight, and make a great team.
My favorite parts of this book, Beer, were the overview of the types of testing preformed in the QA lab, and the chapter on the future of beer. It's a very informative and thought provoking.

Cheers

Commercial Brewing

This book is for commercial brewing only. Being a homebrewer myself I found this book very interesting but on a massive scale so if you’re looking for homebrew books this isn’t the one for you.

Cant tell. Audiobook wont play correctly

Sounds like CD skipping. Thanks for nothing. Very disappointing, indeed, to waste a credit on a fail.
