Publisher's summary

Based on the public television series of the same name, Bradshaw On: The Family is John Bradshaw's seminal work on the dynamics of families that has sold more than a million copies since its original publication in 1988. Here, you will discover the cause of emotionally impaired families. You will learn how unhealthy rules of behavior are passed down from parents to children, and the destructive effect this process has on our society. Using the latest family research and recovery material in this new edition, Bradshaw also explores the individual in both a family setting and a societal setting. He shows you ways to escape the tyranny of family-reinforced behavior traps---from addiction and co-dependency to loss of will and denial---and demonstrates how to make conscious choices that will transform your life and the lives of your loved ones. He helps you heal yourself and then, using what you have learned, helps you heal your family. Finally, Bradshaw extends this idea to our society: by returning yourself and your family to emotional health, you can heal the world in which you live. He helps you reenvision societal conflicts from the perspective of a global family, and shares with you the power of deep democracy: how the choices you make every day can affect---and improve---your world.

Speaker puts me to sleep

Very interesting if I could just focus hard to get over the robotic, drab oration. He should pay to have re-recorded by someone with a better voice.

Generally good - needs updated research

Author needs to check the research regarding guilt and shame. Uses shame as a healthy thing, but doesn’t reference guilt - needs to understand difference between guilt and shame.

simplified vocabulary + overall good organization

If you need help and understanding and you feel like you need to find answers on your own and want to wait for a therapist to figure it out....you will relate to this book....anybody could relate in their own way. plus he puts it in Lamens Terms so I was able to comprehend this peach of a book.

Okay...

It's okay for becoming aware of common dysfunctional patterns in family systems theory. It may be helpful to slow the narrator down using the speed feature in the app. He speaks fast and at different rates.

The conclusion was very liberal contrasting the view of dysfunctional family systems discussed. Yet, it still seemed strict and polarizing. Also, supporting the author's highest conclusions with even moderate views of some of the belief systems cited is not possible without making those belief system something they are not.

I think everyone should read this book.

This book had alot of information I wish I'd know when I was younger. Even if it doesn't pertain to your own life, childhood and family it will probably help you understand and maybe even help others.

Excellent and healing work

Everything John Bradshaw wrote is amazing. I’ve healed and learned so much from him!

The narration is fine. I don’t understand hating a story because of a voice/prosody preference. Don’t miss out, listen to the his work.

Reads like instructions

This is a cheat code to identify personality types based on childhood upbringing and childhood trauma. However, reads like instructions without the final product of instituting practices. Could be better. However, very helpful in developing empathy for other people based on how they were raised.

Everything this man writes is brilliant

It's one of his earlier works and you can tell--but, dang this guy is brilliant.
I have loved every book of his that I have read.
