Publisher's summary

Personal Organizing Coach Marin Rose argues that we're all in a toxic relationship with our stuff and that we've got some serious thinking to do before we can expect to make lasting, positive change. In this book, she explores the common emotional barriers to people reducing consumption and ownership, from personal feelings of anxiety, guilt, and regret, to our faith in the omnipresent American illusion that stuff is a direct path to happiness.

Marin guides us in a thorough examination of our individual priorities and goals, and helps us answer honestly to the self-deceptive thoughts that keep us beholden to clutter. If you're thinking about committing to organized living - to save time and money, reduce stress, and make space in your heart and home for the wonders yet to come - recognizing and working through these barriers are the first crucial steps.

Life changing.

Over the last 3 yrs I have managed to downsize our 5 bedroom house for our 4 kids to the point that we are planning to travel the country for a year in an RV. It was made possible by the seed this short little book planted. I've now read (listened) to it about 6 times. The emotional connection to our stuff is really what it's about. Being a super intentional owner of our stuff is key. Thank you, Marin, for this book!!!!

Excellent Information

I really enjoyed this book. We are in the process of building a tiny house and working on decluttering our 1300 square foot home is a challenge and this book made me feel so much better about tackling the issue.

I Love This Encouragement

While I am in my late 60's my sons and their families are not. I have found I love going to one of the homes because while it is beautiful it is basic or as I have discovered "minimal". I knew we had too much stuff so I started thinking about what would it take to change that. This book has been such a directive encouragement. She was right many "organizing" people direct to getting storage situations (while being helpful with uncontrolled clutter) which do not deal with both the reasons one got there in the first place nor does it set one free from a lot of stuff. I have started with my two most packed (but organized) rooms. I am going to listen to this through the summer to keep the vision. Thanks so much. I look forward to the rest uncluttered brings!

some great thoughts & insights

I took away a couple good things - like why am I saving boxes. Those will be some of the first things I get rid of!

A great book on the philosophy of clutter

After listening to this short book I revisited my "decide later" tile and got rid of about 90%. As importantly the 10% I kept I really likeand appreciate.

Simple and clear

Thank you for writing this book. I thought it might be too short to have an impact on me but it delivered a clear and concise message! Like its message, this book is clutter free and showed me less IS MORE with a delivery that was compassionate and gentle.
It rocks and I started decluttering quilt free immediately.

I needed motivation and help decluttering

I got overwhelmed with collections like Longaberger baskets and carousel horses that I have not used nor displayed. I loved the audiobook and have listened to it several times on my decluttering journey.

Nope. More Like Stop Buying Brand Name Stuff

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I found ithe author's style judgey, without being particularly enlightening. In other words, not tough-love "own your s***" judgey, just "I dislike my own clients" judgey. Made it half-way through, so it might improve. Quite repetitive, in a very short book. It may have made a better blog post.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Get to the point of helping the reader to release "stuff", rather than judging her/him for having bought it in the first place... much perseveration around marketing and branding here. I get the feeling the author's mother had one too many Coach purses for her liking.

Did Marin Rose do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Didn't mind the author's narration, just her content and style.

Was Breaking Up with Your Stuff worth the listening time?

Nope.

Any additional comments?
