About this listen

Teri and Phil had never needed their own personal god. But when Phil is passed up for a promotion - again - it's time to take matters into their own hands. And look online.

Choosing a god isn't as simple as you would think. There are too many choices; and they often have very hefty prices for their eternal devotion: blood, money, sacrifices, and vows of chastity. But then they find Luka, raccoon god of prosperity. All he wants is a small cut of their good fortune. Oh - and to crash on their couch for a few days.

Divine Misfortune is a story of gods and mortals - in worship, in love, and at parties.

Mystical fun

The worlds of A. Lee Martinez are filled with a delightful and sometimes nonsensical mystery, and show how thin the border can be between ourselves and everything we can't explain.

Divine Misfortune is a hilarious and oddly believable look at how the world could be if the Gods truly showed themselves, existed all at the same time and adapted themselves to our time.
It was a very enjoyable audiobook, and one I will find myself returning to, often.

Very Orginial

Once again, I find Martinez has written an original story. They aren't great stories, but they are very good stories and I feel comfortable hearing more.

Divinely Funny

A. Lee is one of the most underrated authors out there. His books are funny. kind and mind-opening without being preachy. Thank you for all the great books and laughs!! Enjoy this every time I re-read it because not only well written but expertly read. If you like Christopher Moore, Tom Robbins or Kevin Hearne you will enjoy this author tremendously.

His Second Best

If you haven't read Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain, I'd recommend starting with that one. I think it's by far Martinez's best, and it's the reason I've read four of his books, even though I think two of them were mediocre at best (Monster, and Chasing the Moon). I'm moving on to other authors, but I would definitely recommend Emperor Mollusk, and I would say Divine Misfortune is worth the read but not a must-read either.

Gods Gone Wild

If you listen to the audio clip for Divine Misfortune, you will not only get a good sample of the nice narration work of Fred Berman, but you will be immediately clued in to the zany tone that carries through this whole book. A. Lee Martinez includes a whole pantheon of Norse, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and more gods in this farce and the story is presented strictly for comedy; no deep thoughts or religious commentary here. It won't bring new insights, but it will probably make you laugh out loud. The tone of the book reminded me of the Iron Druid fantasy series with gods behaving in ways that would make atheism very attractive. Great listen for some good laughs.

Good fantasy humor, like Discworld

What did you like best about Divine Misfortune? What did you like least?

I liked the mix of modern earth life and the casual acceptance of gods and their favor in everyday modern earth life. I disliked that there was no serious discussion of an afterlife in all of that.

If you’ve listened to books by A. Lee Martinez before, how does this one compare?

I haven't but I might look them up in the future.

What about Fred Berman’s performance did you like?

I thought Fred did a good job of narrating. Didn't make any mistakes that I heard and he did manage to make the characters mostly distinct from each other.

Did Divine Misfortune inspire you to do anything?

Laugh

Another great one!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love A. Lee Martinez, but I usually read his books. This is the second one I've listened too and the story and narration was very good. Funny as usual.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

All the character voices. Excellent job of accents and personalities!

A. Lee Martinez is great!

This book was cute and funny. The narrator did a great job with the different voices, and it was a fast, fun read. There were gods in this book that I'd never heard of.

entertainment - only 2% fat

I'd just come out of a heavy book and this was perfect. this book was entertaining. .. but the lite version. amusement, humour, action and silly in equal measure without the faintest sniff of depth. not as fast food as some books. neither was it gormet . but it had a good balance and kept me engaged and tuned in without being challenged.
