Publisher's summary

When a mysterious stranger brings word of a dragon, Jason's whole world changes.

The northern mountain village offers protection from the threat of dragons, but is a difficult place, especially for a misfit like Jason Dreshen. His days are spent hunting for food for his family, praying for warmth, and trying to hide his strange silver eye that grants him dragon sight.

When a stranger visits during the local Freedom Festival searching for a different kind of dragon, everything changes.

Forced down the mountainside, Jason learns the truth of powers he'd only heard about in rumors. While running from deadly Dragon Souls, he finds he might have more of a connection to magic than only dragon sight. In order to save himself and stop the Dragon Souls, he must learn a truth about himself that leads him closer to the one thing he fears above all others: dragons.

Somehow, he might be the only one able to protect them from the Dragon Souls, but how can he protect what he hates?

Hmmmmmm

Matt Godfrey is awesome as always. His narration is spot on as usual.
I really want to like this story and I am enjoying the dragons. The MC however,......
How can one person be that dense????
Everything is a mistake in his mind (I got so tired of hearing the word "mistake"). I understand he's had bad experiences with dragons but when youre told they are not only trained to violence but also controlled to make it happen? And when you are shown how good they are normally, yet refuse to see? I hope this character grows and opens his mind a bit.
I plan to listen because I want to know what becomes of the dragons and I will continue to hope the MC will improve.

Easy reading, but sometimes drags on

This book was easy to read and follow. And in case you forget that dragons are going to appear at some point, the author repeats the word many times on every "page". Important details are also explained repetitively. Shouldn't be too hard for the imagination-challenged among us to, well, imagine. The story is set in a pre-steam era, so I was a little surprised that terms like "heat signature" was part of their vocabulary. I will read the next.

Great Story

Much more to this story than the small listeners clip could've shown. I'm super glad I got the opportunity to give this series a go. Matt does the narration superbly well! I'm excited to move forward so, on to the next book I go!!

Great, clean fiction

Many of the reviews are less than 5 stars. D.K. Holmberg does not seem to care about perfection in his stories and at times there are some slight annoyances. That said, I really did enjoy this book and am not rating it on those annoyances, but on how I enjoyed it overall. One of the best parts is that Holmberg writes clean fiction which is severely lacking by most authors. I really appreciate this about Holmberg.

repetitive

it's an interesting enough story, but the sheer amount of times words like "dragon" or "power" are said is bothersome. Both can be substituted by many other terms depending on the context.

I still think the it's worth a listen though.

Very Average

There was nothing in this book to truly distinguish it from other stories. There were hints at lots of locations, people, powers, with little to no explanation or even promise of better things to come. Very classic ending of main character has to overcome something that they don't know how to do on their own that no one else probably has figured out on their own, but they managed to do it and even then it's not enough to kill the bad guy. also very typical that the bad guys just constantly are able to find them no matter what.

I liked it.

This book did a lot of world building. The story set up a good foundation for distinct characters to grow into better ones.
