About this listen
Read by the author.
Grow your relationship through conversations that make a difference.
New York Times bestselling author Susan Scott guides couples through eight must-have conversations to create a fierce love that stands the test of time and grows stronger over the years.
Often in our romantic relationships we long for deep connection, but we don't know how to communicate well, and sometimes even withhold what we're really thinking and feeling. This can lead to fighting, resentment, or worse, complacency--where you are just going through the motions, living more like roommates than two people in love. As Susan writes, "It's as if we've pulled off our own wings." As couples, we don't stop to think how important our conversations are. And we certainly don't understand that what we talk about and how we talk about them determine whether our relationships will thrive, flatline, or fail.
In Fierce Love, Susan Scott guides couples through conversations that lead to deep connection and lasting commitment. Using true stories and hands-on exercises, Susan helps us to
- understand that the conversation is the relationship;
- identify and dispel five relationship myths that mislead and derail us;
- learn eight must-have conversations that are critical to enriching relationships; and
- stop fighting or ignoring issues and start connecting in a deep and meaningful way.
After a season where many relationships were tested and tried, where some thrived and others exposed cracks—including those that couples didn't even realize were there or realized but didn't acknowledge--now is the best time to learn to communicate well. By having honest, compelling conversations with our partners, we can foster true connection and fierce love.

Story
What makes love last? Why does one couple stay together forever, while another falls apart? And most importantly, is there a scientific formula for love? Drs. John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. Their goal: to identify the building blocks of love.

We are living in a world divided. Race and ethnicity, caste and color, gender and sexuality, class and education, religion and political party have all become demographic labels that reduce our differences to simplistic categories in which “we” are vehemently against “them”. But Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis’s own experience - of being the first female and first Black minister in her church’s history, of being in an interracial marriage, and of making peace with childhood abuse - illustrates that our human capacity for empathy and forgiveness is the key.

Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Story
Raised in a devoutly Catholic home, Kelly Bandas spent her entire childhood trying hard not to tick off “the man” or the Lord. And for the most part, she crushed it. But as she got older and began to navigate what it looked like to truly live in a world where gender roles, race, and politics weren’t always so black and white, Kelly realized that her former worldview was beginning to feel like that pair of Forever 21 jeans that used to glide effortlessly over her hips but now required a lot of stretching and acrobatic maneuvering to shimmy into place. And she’s not alone.

For those who want to dive deeper into Enneagram wisdom, expert teacher Suzanne Stabile opens the concept of three Centers of Intelligence: thinking, feeling, and doing. When we learn to manage these centers, each for its intended purpose, we open a path to reducing fear, improving relationships, growing spiritually, and finding wholeness. Drawing on the dynamic stability of the Enneagram, she explains each number's preferred and repressed Center of Intelligence and its role in helping us move toward internal balance.

In the 6th century BCE, the Greek philosopher Pythagoras—a man remembered today more for his theorem about right-angled triangles than for his progressive politics—founded a commune in a seaside village in what’s now southern Italy. The men and women there shared their property, lived as equals, and dedicated themselves to the study of mathematics and the mysteries of the universe.

Story
Creator, mother, lover, and social media phenomenon Tova Leigh explores what the hell you are supposed to do when you find yourself living a life you don't remember signing up for. I was bored, angry, tired, and sad. I felt all alone yet I had nothing to complain about. I had a good job, a husband who wasn't shagging his assistant, three children who apart from being the occasional a**holes were pretty good kids; a house, a dog, and everything else we are told as little girls we should aspire to. But inside, I was growing restless.

Thanks goodness for speed control
Content was great. Narration was painful. Thankfully able to speed it up…would’ve been a deal breaker otherwise. Have recommended to friends but specifically only print version.

Good advice
Concerning that you find out at the end of the book that the author is a result of failed relationships- and lives happily alone 🤔 although I liked much of her thinking and advice

Solid if you lack the fundamentals of honest communication with your SO
This book was underwhelming for me. Maybe I’m being harsh but the guidelines in this book seem to boil down to having honest communication with your significant other. The author provides some strategy or frameworks you can use for conversations, but I can’t say I learned anything I didn’t already know. Some things I took away from this book that I felt were helpful I’ve written below.
When having a fierce conversation with your partner, refrain from giving feedback or advice until they’ve completely articulated their position or emotions. Ask them questions to further the conversation rather than brining in your own experience or switching the conversation to you.
When thinking of feedback, think of it as a gift. Feedback/advice really should be a gift and so ask yourself before you give advice, what would it be like to receive this “gift” as the other person. Consider their current emotions, position and context before inserting your take.
Ask yourself if you are holding yourself accountable to what you ask of a current or potential partner. If you are not living to those
Expectations, you can’t expect it or your partner.

This is NOT for shared love (although it sets out to be)
The author does share some good wisdom on living a content life from all types of relationship dynamic perspective. However, the reader will detect biased tone early on and at the end it’s clear the book is really her perspective on what matters: honoring and respecting yourself and everyone in your life and expecting that in return. Her perspective on romantic relationships is NOT helpful because of her bias from her own experiences, which have not been positive. If you are reading this to get perspective on how to have a successful lifelong romantic relationship, this is not it.
