Publisher's summary

Garm trained her whole life as a member of the secretive Quadrad organization. Her planet is famous for its assassins and governmental manipulators. It’s whispered that behind every mysterious death lurks a Quadrad. But when Garm enters the wide galaxy, she finds her prestigious training entirely insufficient.

Most Quadrad are abysmal failures, unable to cope in an advanced technological empire. The Quadrad are nothing but a very clever marketing campaign that has been going on for 20,000 years. But Garm is different. She is determined to be the most successful, most lethal, and richest “agent of change” in history. To that end, she assembles the best spaceship crew she can afford. Unfortunately, she is extremely poor. Her ship is a former pleasure cruise vessel, the Summer Dream Adventure. And her crew is made up of ancient relics, war criminals, incomprehensible aliens, nymphomaniacs, and creatures so dangerous, just being near them can prove fatal. To make matters worse, Garm is personally being hunted by the government, which seeks to forcibly put an end to the Quadrad myth forever.

good read, incomplete

Not bad but not enough info about the primary person. It should have connected to Hank.

There's no Hank but a Garm prequel

I enjoyed it. It was good getting to learn more about Garms history and where she came from. Though being a book in the Hank series and not an adjunct to it, maybe Hank should have at least made a short appearance at the end or something. Maybe this would have been better labeled as a prequel #.05 (with a book 0 left open for a Hank back story) rather than as book 8 in the series

Garm prequel

So yea, it's a Garm prequel. It starts off a bit slow, but it picks up a bit in the end. The story is interesting and the characters have decent development throughout the book. Naturally it doesn't share the same humor without Hank or the other usual cast of characters.

Overall I liked it, but if you're looking for another Hank book, this isn't it.

Getting to know Garm better

This is a tale focused on Garm, and her past, long before her intersection with Hank. The author deep dives into her character and the Quadrad with an all new adventure. One full of new and interesting faces.

I was worried that the book had a different narrator, but once you understand that Hank is not in this book, a female voice makes sense. The narrator did a good job, and uses different voices and inflections for different people.

As someone who has listened to every book twice I would recommend this one as well. It's not a traditional Hank book, but it shared that same vibe as the rest of the series while also filling in some gaps in Garm and the universe that these stories take place in.

Campbell Pulls It Off Again!

I honestly can't believe how good this was throughout. I was unsure at first but quickly discovered that Campbell struck gold yet again with a fresh, but well tied-in, backstory to Garm that would do well as a standalone for the uninitiated ('the poor souls).

Hard luck Garm

No Hank story but a fun story in a familiar setting. The audio sounded a little off but the reader does a solid performance.

Narrator makes a difference!

Narrator was ok, but I missed Liam. I think he is the best I have ever heard.

Hank is funny always, but Liams narration makes it even more LOL funny.

Terrible narration

I found this book because I love the hard luck hank series and I’ve been looking for more by Steven Campbell. The narration for those books was fantastic and made the story 10 times better. By comparison this book was a big let down, the voice just does not suit the characters and that makes it hard to get into the story. I realize that you have to use a different narrator since its female garm speaking instead of male hank, but there has to be better options
