Publisher's summary

“On a par with such greats as Stephen King, Clive Barker and Peter Straub” (Midwest Book Review), Bentley Little brings his unnerving talents to the terrifying story of a dysfunctional family in crisis.

Steve Nye writes for an alumni magazine and his long-term relationship is on the steady path to marriage. But his quiet life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a phone call from his mother. His father attacked her and has been committed to a mental asylum. The doctor says he’s suffering from dementia. But Steve’s father seems so calm, clear-eyed, and perfectly lucid when he whispers, “I killed her....”

Is it simply another symptom of delusion and madness? To find the answer, Steve investigates the cryptic message leading him down a terrifying path of his own making—and of his own nightmares....

A different one

Not Bentleys best novel. Nothing supernatural and sometimes a bit confusing. But still a ok story.

Very disturbing. I loved it!💜

This was a very strange book at times, also highly disturbing most of the time and yet I couldn’t seem to put it down.
It felt a bit long to me, however I’m so glad I continued on (like I had a choice 🤷🏻‍♀️)because in the end, it was totally worth it.
I’ll tell you one thing, I won’t forget this book anytime soon.
On top of a great story was the brilliant narration of Andrew Gibson. I’ve heard his voice talents in many different genres and he’s absolutely wonderful but IMO, creepy, psychological, mystery, suspense, thriller, story telling is what his voice was made for.
Well done!!
If you’re into horror, I highly recommend this book.

not Mad, Just disappointed

I am not mad, I am just disappointed. Could have been a lot better. Got to the end and kind of just said, that’s it?

Not one likable character in the entire book!

It’s hard to pinpoint my issues with this book. The biggest issue was I hated every character in the book. The story was so-so. It wasn’t scary. It wasn’t a thriller. It just didn’t even come across as a Bentley Little book at all. The narration was kind of lackluster, but that kind of fit the book…

Like walking through quicksand

**Spoiler Alert**
Bentley Little is one of my “go to” authors. I’ve listened to many, many of his books, and enjoyed all of them.
This one is not like the others. First, the side stories were confusing at first. Once I realized what they were, they just felt like (boring) filler to make the book longer.
The utter gore and violence in this book was more than I expected or wanted. At times I felt like I was listening to the life story of an actual serial killer. I’ve never hit the fast forward button this much.
The ending sucked.
Feel like I wasted my time and $ on this one.
