About this listen

This program is read by the author.

A vital, timely text on the viruses that cause pandemics and how to face them, by the New York Times best-selling author of How Not to Die.

From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: Human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both pre-existing ones and those newly identified - emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world.

How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies? In How to Survive a Pandemic, Dr. Michael Greger, physician and internationally-recognized expert on public health issues, delves into the origins of some of the deadliest pathogens the world has ever seen. Tracing their evolution from the past until today, Dr. Greger spotlights emerging flu and coronaviruses as he examines where these pathogens originated, as well as the underlying conditions and significant human role that have exacerbated their lethal influence to large, and even global, levels.

As the world grapples with the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus 2019, or COVID-19, Dr. Greger reveals not only what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones during a pandemic, but also what human society must rectify to reduce the likelihood of even worse catastrophes in the future.

A Must Listen

Excellent review of the information on Pandemics, where they come from and where we are heading unless we make some significant changes in our Animal farming and livestock practices. Especially all the CAFOs that have cropped up contributing to the next pandemic. Well written and presented.

As usual, Michael Gregger sticks to the facts while making a readable, accessible, and convincing argument for change.

Incredibly eye opening!

I feel this book should be required for every human on this planet to read for the gift of being able to walk among this beautiful planet. I was completely mind blown by all of the things that I learned in this book. May we all work together to build a better future and vote with our dollars to help our future generations.

Dr. Gregor has done it again!

In the face of a modern pandemic we all want to know how to stay safe, both now and in the future. Dr. Gregor uses a variety of scientific data, historical virology information and predictions, and recommendations from reputable organizations to elicit a call to action. He helps reader readers understand how pandemic strains of viruses are created, what we can do as individuals and consumers to stay safe, and urges government and industry to follow suit to keep us safe. Interesting and informative read!

This book is full of astounding facts and practical insight

I listened to the entire book, and have purchased a printed copt in order to easily revisit several practical information chapters again.

Greger shares all the evidence necessary for even the most critical to see understand the big takeaways clearly. Some may feel overwhelmed by the amount of compressive detail Greger provides if they are new to the subjects discussed in this book. But anyone will walk away with valuable new insights on CAFO impacts, pandemic preparedness, and more by picking the chapters you are most interested in first.
