Publisher's summary

Innkeeper Holly White is decking the halls this Christmas season, but someone is on the naughty list when a body is discovered in the fifth installment in the Christmas Tree Farm mystery series from bestselling author Jacqueline Frost.

It’s Christmastime in Mistletoe, Maine, and the Historical Society has launched a widespread campaign to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary. Descendants of the founding family, the Snows, have returned for the first time, and Holly is determined to make the family’s visit magical. In an attempt to put Mistletoe on the map, Holly’s mother, a respected local baker, attempts to break a record by baking the world’s largest gingerbread man, but her plans are whisked away when Mr. Snow’s body ends up in the batter.

When Mr. Moore, the local mistletoe farmer, is accused of the crime, Holly reprises her role as amateur sleuth to protect the sweet older man. Between hosting the inconsolable Mrs. Snow and other guests at the inn, receiving threatening messages telling her to stop her investigation, and preparing for her first wedding anniversary with Sheriff Evan Gray, she might need a Christmas miracle to survive.

When someone breaks into Holly’s office and scratches a warning into her desk, she knows she has little time left. Can Holly uncover the killer before someone else gets burned, or is her involvement a recipe for trouble?

Worth the wait

Loved how Holly, the main character, grows and the other characters are depicted like real life friends.

Ok

I really enjoy but sometimes loathe cozy mysteries. I’ve listened to all of the books in this series and I’ll probably continue to listen. Sometimes the “heroine” is aggravating though. She always expects people to just answer her questions and gets offended when they call her out on her snooping, because that’s essentially what she’s doing. She has no grounds to question people, no one owes her any sort of an explanation. So I’m glad that in this book people are actually putting her in her place when it comes to her nosiness. She also grates my nerves because she tries to play innocent with her husband and parents when it is discovered that she is again snooping and will again get offended when they call her out on it. Also, she doesn’t care about her or her guests safety. When her husband makes safety suggestions it irritates her because it will take away from the authentic feel of her bed and breakfast. Even though her life is danger yet again. It doesn’t make sense. I know that there are stubborn people in this world and people who are curious by nature but Holly is just starting to get annoying. There has to be at least one book where she isn’t purposely putting her life in danger. I also don’t like how she is almost 30 and no one holds her accountable for her actions. Everyone is always so grateful and relived when she’s saved. If Holly didn’t keep putting herself in these situations no one would have to be relived. Also, what happened to Evan’s cat that he saved in the first book “Whiskers” I think was the name. We’ve never heard anything else about that cat. Anywho overall the book was ok I just wish they would change it up a little bit. It always seems to be the same predictable formula. Have Holly actually work with Evan or have something else happen besides there being a murder, Evan has arrest someone Holly loves, so Holly has to get involved and almost killed, she’s saved…..the end. I like the setting and the premise of the book and especially the holiday theme. It does get me in the holiday spirit.
