About this listen

His new job might kill him. But if he quits, he can’t keep his new magic artifact.

Matteo lives on the back of a giant turtle, one of several kaiju that roam the land. It's the only place safe from the hordes of monsters roaming the forest below. Everything from goblins to grasshoppers make living on the ground deadly.

Matteo's new job is to kill those monsters in the giant turtle’s path, pest control for their home kaiju. He just has to survive the training. Unfortunately for him, the other recruits hate him, the mortality rate for recruits is sky high, and every outing involves fighting monsters that can easily kill him.

He has help from his squad and the magical artifacts they were all given. The goddess creates random artifacts with esoteric effects. Matteo needs to figure out how to use his artifact and help his squad do the same. It’s the only way he is getting out of this alive.

Cool and strange world.

This author made a very cool world with amazing creatures.
I'm still thinking about how it would all work. With gigantic beasts that people live on and they beasts attack each other with the people attacking along with the beast and protecting it. And there are monsters living on the beasts also.
The magic system is awesome and kinda weird as well. Things like the "butter knife of speed."
Awesome story. I wonder if there's going to be a book 2.
I'm giving this book 8 out of 5 stars.

Decent story, decent listen

The MC was surprisingly likeable and had some spine. The other characters grew on me too. The magic system is interesting, and the world building is coming along. And who doesn't love cities atop large animals? The juxtaposition of names borrowed from other cultures/religions/mythos was a bit of a head-scratcher though. The narrator was pleasant to listen to and the character lines were delivered well, though I personally prefer a little more drama? Inflection? in the overall narration delivery. And there were a few mispronunciations (a personal peeve). But I went along for the ride and was happy to listen through the whole thing. Give it a listen.

Good

This novel is great for new readers of fantasy, it doesn’t dive to deep on the how but rather depicts an fantasy world in the truest sense. The plot is straightforward and you’re never confused about the direction of the book.

Great characters

This is a great book for older readers, my 10 year old son loved this book. Throughout the story you are learning new things about the characters as they fight weird monsters and dangerous villains. The main character is so well described that you understand the reasons he does things before it is really explained.

Mispronunciations and overdubs

The story was good. It just didn’t hold my interest, though there was nothing I could point at as to why. It wasn’t a good match for me.

The narrator had some issues. There were some words which sounded mispronounced. The one that I can recall is envoy, which sounded like invoy, not en-voy or even on-voy. Also there were a number of overdubs where the narrator corrected a sentence or two. It wouldn’t have been bad, but it sounded like a different studio was used. The voice was an octave or two deeper. It went from normal to deep then back to normal.

Okay book bad performance

The Book:
Overall it the book was okay. The magic was decent but the author couldn't keep a consistent culture.

The Performance:
I tried a few times to listen to this book but the performance was bad. On top of that the editing was rough and patched together in many different places.

I wouldn't recommend this audible book, but it might be worth getting the text book.
