About this listen

Roll over and die, or become so strong nothing can stop him.

Cast into a brutal military camp by his once loving master, Mateo feels like the last six wonderful years of his life have been a lie. With the mysteries surrounding him growing, Mateo knows that his only option is to become one of the supernaturally powerful Duelists and grow in power until he can take his fate into his own hands.

That plan is thwarted from the beginning when he gets stuck with the lowest-ranked Root Card against his will, ensuring that his growth as a Duelist will always be excruciatingly slow. To make matters worse, the camp he has been thrown into is completely cutthroat, and survival isn’t guaranteed by a long shot.

Saddled with two other kids that he has never met before and a crow spirit bound to him by an ethereal chain, Mateo will need every ounce of courage, resilience, and mental acuity he can muster if he wants to make it out of the training camp alive.

Don't miss the start of the next great Fantasy LitRPG Series by Seth Ring, author of the best-selling Battle Mage Famer and Nova Terra. Grab your copy today and join Mateo as he ascends through the flames of war.

Awesome

usually im not a fan of stories where the mc is a slave but I really enjoyed this one once I realized that the mc wasn't really treated as a slave just the normal ruthless boot camp that is the norm on fantasy books

Good Series Start

Seth Ring starts by introducing us to a adolescent apprentice, Mateo, to what appears to be a scribe association which, ostensibly, is a keeper of records and books. While Mateo has no magical powers he does possess a highly advanced eidetic memory. Things go sideways and he's kidnapped and forced into slavery and forced recruitment into a stealth military organization of the empire along with many others his age.

His and others his age are subjected to a grueling and unforgiving training regimen, similar to that experienced by the Halo series Spartan II youths. There is magic and the class rating has a similar association with mineral levels as with the Cradle series. However, while there are similar aspects to the other series, this series plays out quite differently.

There's an ample amount of intrigue, character bonding, backstabbing and harrowing encounters. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for the next book in the series.

Ramón De Ocampo's performance was well done.

Seth Ring Doesn't Miss

Seth historically has done a really good job with OP MC's and with the strong to stronger tag I seen when he posted this I was expecting much of the same.

To be frank this MC is no where near OP, above average at best with plot given set backs, however he is highly competent and intelligent which makes this such a fun read.

It is a card based series, but book one doesn't heavily feature the cards. It sets a solid foundation without rushing through anything.

This is going to be a phenomenonal series.

An interesting start

When the mc’s life gets turned upside down I almost quit, personally I don’t like the slave plot line. If that’s you as well DO NOT DO IT. They way this is written isn’t some tragic backstory creating an op Mc scarred by his suffering. This MC has one thing going for him. Brains, he is smart and the book manages to do that without making the other characters morons. I really enjoyed this book and the narration is solid.

Another great Book 1

A bit of a slow start, but after that I was hooked. Can’t wait for book 2. Good for people who like Red Rising and Hunger Games. Had to slow the narration a touch, otherwise excellent performance.

Suspense/thriller/heavy character building/light action

Great story line but the action was light and watered down. To give the book more length. Awesome narration however. The MC could have used more interesting skills/powers to keep me interested. No book 2 for me.

What is the overall plot driver?

The writing is easy to listen to but what is the bigger plot motivation? More of a training montage than anything
