Show me your darkness, and I'll show you mine.
Another pretty cage.
Whisked away to the Fire Court, Scarlett Monrhoe finds herself in the hands of the man who killed her mother. The Prince of Fire. Thrust amongst the Fae court she loathes, she is at their mercy. She doesn’t know what plans he has for her, but she has plans of her own. She just hasn’t decided how thoroughly she wants to break him yet. If only he didn’t tempt her with every breath, every touch, every kiss. It’s another dangerous game that has her wondering if she will be the one irreparably broken in the end.
Another dangerous game.
The Fae Queen has plans of her own. She’s determined to get to Scarlett in any way she can, and that includes using a mortal prince that followed the lost Fae princess across the border. Crown Prince Callan is desperate to get Scarlett back from the Fire Prince and return to Baylorin. The question is, what is he willing to sacrifice for the Wraith he loves who’s trailed by shadows?
Another race against time.
Every day that passes, Lord Tyndell and Mikale get closer to finding where she is hidden in the Fire Court. Every day that passes puts those Scarlett left behind in more danger. Every day that passes, more secrets are revealed. Truth has been buried in history that has long-since been rewritten, but in order to separate facts from lies, they will be forced to cross other borders and seek answers from kingdoms far more terrifying than the Fire Court.
The stars are fading.
The shadows are calling.
The darkness threatens everything.

If you're in a book slump, read this. I know that right now everybody cannot get enough of the fourth wing series, but I'm only on book 2, and I already think that this entire series is gonna be a 100 times better than the fourth wing series.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe not. Read these and find out for yourself.
If you're a fan of Sarah J Mass work and Jennifer L. Armentrout, then you are going to be a fan of Melissa K. Roehrich.

Scarlett begins the novel as immature and self-absorbed, often making choices that prioritize her own desires over the well-being of those around her. She is torn between two men, seemingly unable—or unwilling—to make a decision, leading them both on in a way that feels selfish rather than truly conflicted. Her romantic entanglements are a reflection of her broader struggles: she wants power and control but hesitates to take true responsibility for the consequences of her actions.
Throughout much of the story, Scarlett’s leadership is questionable. She demands authority but lacks the wisdom to wield it effectively. She is reactive rather than proactive, often making impulsive decisions that put herself and others at risk. Her selfishness isn’t just in love but in her reluctance to fully commit to the responsibilities that come with her role. Readers may find themselves frustrated with her choices, but this frustration serves a purpose—it highlights just how much she needs to grow.
That growth does eventually happen, albeit slowly. Through trials, betrayals, and losses, Scarlett is forced to mature. She begins to understand that leadership isn’t about power alone; it’s about sacrifice, wisdom, and putting others before herself. By the end of the novel, she finally takes ownership of her role—not just as a ruler, but as a person who understands the weight of her decisions. It’s a hard-won transformation, and while she still has flaws, there’s a clear sense that she is on a better path.
Ultimately, Lady of Shadows delivers a compelling character arc for Scarlett, even if it requires patience to watch her reach her potential. Her journey from selfishness to responsibility is satisfying, making the book’s latter half far stronger than its beginning. Readers who enjoy flawed heroines with room for growth will appreciate her evolution, even if they find themselves exasperated with her along the way.

Sadly I have no patience to wait for the narration for the next three books so I’ll just be reading them but when it comes out I’ll for sure listen!!

The male voice actor’s female voice imitations were funny to me.
There are some contradictions that were a bit frustrating but I overall enjoyed the book. I would’ve enjoyed more time spent of the bond building between the fire court and Scarlett exploring more of the new world. I would’ve also enjoyed hearing more from our mortal prince and his perspective. I’m suspecting we’ll hear more from him in the future. Scarlett reminds me a lot of Aelin from ToG. Enjoyed the shocking cliffhanger too.
Enjoyed book 2
