Sometimes, you shouldn't go home....

For years, the abandoned MacKenzie mansion remained hidden in rural Wisconsin. Rumors and stories of apparitions, odd noises, accidents, and strange deaths in or near the property were enough to convince the townsfolk it was haunted, and they stayed away.

Lucas MacKenzie and his brother, Nate, know nothing of this when they inherit the property and decide to bring their families to Wisconsin for a major renovation project with HGTV stardom in mind. As they tear out old fixtures and open shuttered windows, the house begins to reveal secrets of a terrible past, and it soon becomes clear the MacKenzies are in grave danger. In the end, only one person can save them.

The story concept is a good one but it’s poorly executed. A whole lot of repetitive dialogue. The reader was much worse than the written work. Screeching voice and not familiar with the text she was reading. If you have a lot of patience & a mediocre experience is what you’re looking for ... go for it. Otherwise give it a miss.

Takes patience to get thru it!

I thought this would be a good haunted house tale but it wasn’t …. It was a great story and an unusual one . I liked the narrators characterizations and the ending really got to me …. Go listen , but don’t say I didn’t warn you !!

What a good tale!

This was a good story except, for me, too many bad things happened to the main characters of this story. I love scary haunted house stories but I don't particularly care for the main characters to have bad things happen to them at every turn. But again it was a good haunted house story.

Good haunted house story

Truly enjoyed this book. The characters personalities were well understood, through the entire book. Captivating.

Excellent Book

At the beginning it seems like the same old haunted house story but, it's not!! The story builds to an intense ending! There were several parts when I was like "Wait, What! Wow!" Great character's and the narrator was perfect! The story gets deep as it all comes together!

The plot thickens!!

I'm not going to give any plot points away, but I really loved this book. There are surprising twists and turns, good characters and the story flows well. The weaving of improbable history was handled very well. Some of the more tragic moments reminded me of Richard Matheson or William Peter Blatty. I read a lot of ghost and supernatural novels and this is the best one I have read in a very long time (some of the independent supernatural fiction on Audible is atrocious.) I really hope there are more novels to come from Cailyn Lloyd. Performance by Hillary Huber is really good also. My only criticism is very minor - please find another word for "canted" - the overuse of that word was (only mildly) distracting! Overall - loved this book!

Great book - atmospheric, smart, surprising story

Overall the concept and story is good. The narrator is really good.
The story is a little random in its characters. Like, I really wasn't expecting modern day wizards. That's not really how the description reads and its not exactly my cup of tea.
Also, the main character annoyed me in just how long she went back and forth with the whole denial and acceptance thing. It just kept going back and forth for way too long and way too many times. Made the story feel like it was dragging at times and just readdressing the same things over and over instead of actually getting into the haunting.
That all being said, it's not the worst book and is worth a listen if you like horror and magic.

Good, but a little random & annoying

Already read the kindle version but for the price decided to try this version. Enjoyed more than the kindle version. Excellent reader.

Great Book

This one was a bit too slow for me to get into the story five chapters and there’s has still not been any interesting events that have occurred in the storyline. To get me interested I would recommend for this author to put something very interesting that happens in the first two chapters and go from there. For the next novel that’s definitely recommended. I stopped reading at this point because the narrator also was poor on this Book.
