Reframing Negativity, Boundaries, Self-Compassion

This audiobook bundle contains three books: reframing negative thinking, setting boundaries, and self-compassion. I had already listened to the book on setting boundaries, but I liked her spin on the concept, so I thought I'd check out this entire bundle. I'm glad I did. I don't know if it's true, but this book feels like it is truly born of experience, not like it's just been hired out to a ghostwriter like so many nonfiction books these days. Some of what she says I've heard before, but some ideas are definitely her takes on concepts and her personal experiences with them. Let me talk a little bit about each book.

I really liked the first book on reframing negative thinking. As you might be able to tell from that title, she doesn't expect you'll eliminate negative thinking. She knows that life is not all hearts and flowers, and she does not expect you to tamp down negativity and replace it with positivity at every turn. Rather, she encourages you to see the negativity from a different perspective, as the title suggests: reframing it. She goes into a lot of detail about how to do this, and I found it a refreshing approach to negativity in the self-help space.

Here's my original review of the setting boundaries book. I have read a fair number of books about setting boundaries, learning to say no, and understanding how to negotiate to fulfill your needs when someone is pushing back hard against you. This particular audiobook didn't really cover any new ground, but I appreciate it anyway. Early on, it made a bold statement about not giving in to your partner’s desires in an intimate relationship if you do not want what they want. For some reason, the way the author stated this resonated with me and gave me pause to re-examine my failed relationship with my ex-husband and clarified some of our problems. For that, I appreciate what this book has to say, even though most of what it says is very familiar if you've read any books about setting boundaries or saying no. I like how the book discussed how to stand up for yourself in an assertive but not aggressive way to family, friends, and those at work.

I thought I understood the author's style after listening to the first two books, but I was pleasantly surprised by the third book on self-compassion. While it certainly is popular in self-help circles these days, I’ve only recently embraced it as I’ve come to understand its importance. What I liked about this particular book is that it actually has meditations and exercises to support the reading. The other books within this bundle did not have that. I loved everything she said about self-love and self-compassion and how she just encouraged you to take little moments to think good thoughts about yourself, encourage yourself, and treat yourself well.

The only thing I wish this audiobook bundle had is a brief PDF to go with it. I'll admit I'm more of a visual person, even though I enjoy audiobooks. If she could have just had a few simple pages for each book that hit the highlights, that would have been enough for a memory jog to help keep key points top of mind and remember to integrate them. For the third book, written directions for the exercises and meditations would have been awesome..

If any of these topics sound worthwhile to you, I recommend checking out this book or audiobook to see this author’s spin on them.

Informative

These trio books is very interesting. Listening to the book helped me see things that I was doing that was hurting me in the long run. It also let me look at things I feel like were more important than other and feeling like I didn't have time to do everything I wanted to do. Finding yourself and listening to your body is important to you and this helps so much on what you can do to better your mental and physical self.
