About this listen

The classic guide for panic attack sufferers—now fully revised and updated.

Panic attacks—approximately 5% of the population will experience them at some time or another. The dread of having an attack—they seemingly come out of nowhere—transforms the ordinary world of everyday life into a nightmare of anxiety and suffering. Best-selling author Bev Aisbett, a survivor of Panic Syndrome herself, has three basic messages:

  • You can beat this
  • You are not alone
  • You will recover

Originally published in 1993, this calm, common sense guide has helped many thousands of panic attack sufferers to overcome their fears. Bev Aisbett explains how panic disorders develop and how to recognise the symptoms, and covers topics such as changing negative thought patterns, seeking professional help and, ultimately, the skills for recovery. This fully revised and updated edition of Living with It provides much-needed reassurance and support, showing the way out of the maze of panic with humor and the insight of first-hand experience.

I have been struggling/suffering with panic attacks and anxiety since the age of 20. I have been to therapists, tried multiple medications...and no one, no one has over explained exactly what I have as simply and directly as this book has. I have hope for the 1st time in 35 years that I may get control over my panic attacks. And learn how to recognize the signs of problems in my life that caused them, rather then simply react to them. I think anyone who suffers from panic attacks must read this book.

I wish I had found this book years ago!

Though this one is a very quick read, it does contain a lot of good advice on living with and overcoming panic attacks and anxiety. Much of the advice in it resonated with me deeply — breathing deeply to avoid panic, not fighting anxiety as to not make it bigger, etc.

As the book suggests, if we can get our thinking right, the rest will follow, as it pertains to mental health. Of course, that’s not the easiest advice in the world to adhere to, but it sure is on-point. With many similar ideas put forth in this one, it becomes a useful little guide in the end.

My only slight complaint is that it’s too short; many of the ideas within it could’ve been elaborated upon to give readers even more sage advice on dealing with fear. Still, it’s a worthy read for sure.
