About this listen

A Sunday Times best seller

The amazing second Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.

Major Dirk Pitt picked up the frantic distress call as he cruised his lumbering amphibious plane over the islands of the Aegean. Brady Air Force base was under fire, its entire force of jets destroyed on the ground...by just one First World War biplane!

A psychotic ex-Nazi, a bloodthirsty Greek strongman and a beautiful double agent set Pitt on the trail of the warped mastermind behind a devastating sabotage plot. And on that trail, danger and death are never far behind....

Rob N

As always, those hooked on Cussler’s stories can only wish we were so daring and talented as Dirk and Al in meeting challenges with so many twists and turns. Always makes you try to anticipate what is really going to happen next.

Eager Cussler reader.

Clive Cussler came along ways in developing his characters to what they became in his later years.
I like how he softened Dirk’s personality.
Always a fun read.

Dirk Pitt #2

Dirk Pitt returns in his second appearance. This time he virtually stumbles into an attack on a remote Aegean airbase by, of all things, a World War I biplane. While that sounds pretty farfetched to us today, this story takes place in the early 1970's and not quite beyond reality back then. Soon he is enmeshed in plots including smugglers, evil geniuses, drug runners, human trafficking, Nazis, traitors and man eating dogs. The story zips along quickly. There is a James Bond movie feel to the plot. All in all, a fun read/listen. Just a small warning in that this book reflects the society at the time and comes across as misogynistic with its attitudes toward women. I suggest taking it in the context of the times and ignore it. While the situations presented would never be allowed to pass today, back then they were considered just normal. I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys the older James Bond films.

sexism

When I first read this book so many years ago, it was an every day occurrence for women to be treated in such a way. Now, I am disgusted to see it how it used to be.

Classic Dirk Pitt

I love an old Nazi war criminal as a bad guy. Great story. Scott Brick is the man too.
