About this listen
"We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." -Benjamin Franklin in the Continental Congress before signing the Declaration of Independence
Set against the backdrop of the isolated forests north of New Hampshire's White Mountains, while camping on family land, Tom and Lori Thornton (and their dog, Buck) find themselves in a sudden SHTF scenario.
No cellular service. Dangerous roads. Limited supplies. And far more questions than answers.
After the shocking murder of Tom's uncle by a band of looters, the couple's already faltering marriage reaches the breaking point amid the chaos. Trust and loyalties are challenged, old friendships are put to the test, and while immediate answers and solutions elude them, they must rely on raw instincts in order to survive.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

Lauren Russell often wondered why her father had been so adamant about teaching her skills that most other fathers wouldn't even consider teaching their daughters. Ever since she was little, she had been taught how to live and survive outdoors, and how to use firearms to protect herself and those around her. Some of the training had been a bit extreme. Or had it been? Many of her questions were answered the day the world as she knew it ended.

Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers. Until the taps run dry. Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life - and the life of her brother - is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Ben McKelvie believes he's moving up in the world when he and his fiancée buy a house in the cushy Washington, DC, suburb of Barcroft. Story
When police chief Nathan Slaughter settles in the tiny mountain community of Potter’s Field, Wyoming, his most fervent prayer is that he has left behind him forever the nightmare he barely survived on a blizzardy night in Detroit. But nothing prepares him for the greater sanity-threatening nightmare he is about to confront. Beginning with the discovery of mutilated cattle on outlying ranches, Slaughter is drawn deeper and deeper into a vortex of terror as animals become savage and children go insane, trapping the entire town in a frenzy of violence. As Slaughter races against time to expose the horrifying secret behind the increasingly savage attacks, he also struggles to overcome his deepest fears.

It was fine until it wasn’t
It was entertaining enough until it took a hard right turn into prepper wet dream territory
It’s sad because the author seemed to be building a good mysterious thriller which he squandered on a cheap resolution
It was so poorly resolved that I couldn’t even finish the book
It’s into the “ It was all just a dream “ territory

A Perfect Blend
I am not only pleasantly surprised but also quite enamored with this authors brilliant style. The attention to detail as well as the sheer time, dedication and challenge it takes to write a book in this genre of this caliber, is quite impressive and uncommon to say the least! the narration was fabulous as well, I have always enjoyed the voice of Paul Costanzo.
Mr. Underhill, please continue your efforts, I am positive that you will strike novelic gold at this rate.
Paul, you know I appreciate your work, keep up the fantastic work my friend!

Pretty good…
Liked a lot of the writing, the inner monologue and the uncertainty of the character. Great narrator. Story took sharp turn 90% of the way through and totally lost me.

Good overall
It was good, a little too much profanity.what also seems to be some major past trauma being put in with crazy wives.

Abrupt ending
Dream sequence really? The end felt very unsatisfying. The narrator was good. Enjoyed listening to him.

Fun, but a bit homespun.
Some good story threads, but a bit choppy. The odd jump forward and weird excuse for exposition to cover the second background made the first section seem irrelevant.

Cheesy
This started ok, wrapped up like a 7th grade essay, “and then they woke up”. Pretty weak attempt.
