About this listen
Christmas. A time for family, friends . . . and enemies?
Nicola is returning to her family home for the Christmas holidays to spend the festive season with her loved ones for the first time in several years. But she gets a shock when she discovers that there will be an unexpected guest joining them for dinner on the big day. Their elderly neighbor, Barbara, will be present at the table too after receiving an invitation from Nicola's parents because they hated to think of the old woman spending the day alone.
That is a big problem for Nicola, although she struggles to let her family members know why. As far as they are concerned, Barbara is just the sweet old lady from next door. But Nicola knows the truth. That woman is not all she seems. And now she is in their house . . .
Forced to confront several demons from her past, Nicola struggles through Christmas Day. But as difficult as it is to face the past, nothing is as hard as what happens next. It seems that Barbara has been waiting for Nicola to return home after all these years. Now she has, things will never be the same again . . .

My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both.

And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Story
Fatima, Farah, Bubblee and Mae, the four sisters of the Amir family, are sometimes tired of being the only Muslim young women in a rural British village, not helped by their eccentric neighbours, including the hippie nudists next door. Oldest sister Fatima - or, as her family have always nicknamed her, Fatti (which, she worryingly suspects, has just as much to do with her inability to lose weight and guilty-pleasure love of Primula squeezy cheese as it does her birth name) - is having a particularly hard time finding her place in the world.

Ignore SB's Reviews
I've noticed "SB" posts fake nasty reviews on all Daniel's books. Apparently it's personal and petty. The books have all been good and I am glad I recognized a vendetta and ignored them. If the person actually hated his writing so much, why keep buying every book as soon as it comes out?

This needs a WARNING
Child sexual abuse, even hints of it, need to be known before readers/listeners dive in. Sheesh.

Don’t judge a book by its cover
Daniel Hurst is an amazing story teller! This was a really great listen and I wished I could have heard it all in one sitting. To be honest there was a scene where Nicola was asked to get the cake from next door. I honestly believe she should have purposefully tripped on the way back and dropped the cake on the ground. But that’s just me. Some secrets aren’t meant to be kept and I feel she should have told her parents and saved years of grief.
