About this listen

Catherine Morland reads tales of Gothic romance, yet leads a country life in Wiltshire. When she travels to Bath, she meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney. She is invited by his sister and father to stay at Northanger Abbey, where she meets all the trappings of Gothic horror that she has read about. Fortunately, she has her own good sense and irresistible but unsentimental hero, Henry Tilney.©1989, 2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd (P)2014 Audible, Inc. The narrator is a very good reader and does perfectly fitting voices for many of the characters, but some of the voice inflections she did for certain characters were horrid, especially for men. Like Thorp for instance… her voice there was nasal and difficult to listen to. She mostly did it for characters that were obnoxious or ridiculous by design, but oh that voice…I had to jump past some parts just to get by. Thankfully, I’ve read the book, so I know what I’m skipping, but if you haven’t, you’re going to have to suffer the grind of getting through. Even annoying characters have to be able to be listened to without wincing or it destroys the whole listen.

Good, but some tough narration points

The narrator, while accurately and carefully portraying the personality of each character with her different voices, made some of them almost impossible to listen to. This book has always been a lighthearted take on the novel itself, and stands the test of time, but the story was hard to enjoy this time.

Snarky wit with unfortunate narration

Since Jane Austen wrote this so early in her life it is tainted with youth. It’s a great story. Her writing style is so unique and engrossing at points that you forget you’re reading.

Super funny and unique!

Charming and silly. I think I see Jane Austen’s personality best in this one.

The heroine is excitable and dramatic and the hero is quick witted and playful. And everything is tied up as neat as a bow at the end

Probably the most openly funny Austen Novel

Sometimes felt it was over acted. Jane Austin is always fun but predictable. It was perfect after a long stressful day to smile and relax on the commute home.

Just a fun listen

I’m a huge Austen fan and this performance is near flawless. I could wish her Henry were more attractive but she understands him- her Katherine is definitive. The actress/reader nails the humor. I am picky- this is amazing- I don’t believe Austen herself could top the reading.

Wow.

Though it doesn't have an epic twist like the "Pride and Prejudice" does, Nothanger Abbey has its own charms. The two stories have a similar air. Henry Tilney is the nicest Auesten hero, and character development of Catherine is great. John Thrope was nastier than Mr Collins (of P&P) and Eleanor reminded a lot of Georgiana (of P&P)

Such a great/ entertaining book. Finishing this book concludes my 1st Jane Austen Marathon of each of her novels! This is one of my favorites now. All her books have comical elements throughout but this one especially is up there with Emma and Pride and prejudice. This narrator was very nice! Her voice fit the demeanor of the story well.

Wonderful book

Great performance with the exception of the vocal characterization of Henry Tilney. As another reviewer mentioned, the narrator could have softened his voice. He came across as harsh thereby making it hard to believe the Catherine would have been initially drawn to him.

If this wasn’t a satire making light of gothic horror novels, then Katherine would rank as nearly the dem level of nincompoop as Rebecca. Thankfully, Katherine has slightly more boldness of character so the novel wasn’t completely a waste. I love that Austen defends the value of novels while writing such a satire of those same novels. Warms my heart. Yes, “trashy” novels serve a purpose and have their place in literature. I’ve had no exposure to this book but that’s my very amateur interpretation of this volume of writing. Love it! And the narration was perfection!!

Outstanding gothic satire
